20 Westbound Podcast – With Nadine Vaughan - Director Commercial Banking – BMO U.S.

What role does the right banking partner really play when companies expand internationally? In this episode, we sit down with Nadine Vaughan, Director of Commercial Banking at BMO U.S., to explore why banking is far more than products and pricing, especially for European companies doing business in the United States. What we cover in this episode Banking as a Strategic PartnershipNadine explains why selecting the right banking partner is critical for growth, risk management, and long-term success, particularly in a cross-border context. German vs. U.S. Commercial BankingWe dive into some of the most common differences German companies encounter when entering the U.S. market, including: Company credit cards and personal guarantees Credit lines and lending structures Intercompany loans and cross-border financing expectations Relationship-driven vs. transaction-driven banking cultures Alongside the professional insights, Nadine opens up about her personal journey. Growing up in East Germany, she experienced the fall of the Iron Curtain during her teenage years, a formative moment that brought its own kind of culture shock as the world quite suddenly expanded. Years later, moving to the United States brought a second culture shock, one that reshaped her understanding of business, leadership, and communication. These experiences deeply inform how she works with international clients today, particularly those navigating unfamiliar systems and expectations. We also talk about Nadine’s strong commitment to community engagement. As a board member of Women in Manufacturing (WiM), she is actively involved in supporting greater representation, leadership development, and opportunity within a critical sector of the economy. She shares why manufacturing continues to matter so much, and how organizations like WiM help build not only stronger companies, but stronger communities. Rather than offering a checklist of lessons, this episode leaves listeners with a broader understanding: international expansion works best when companies surround themselves with partners who truly understand both sides of the Atlantic. Banking in the U.S. often requires a different mindset, one that is more relationship-driven, more explicit about structures and risk, and more proactive in communication. At the same time, Nadine’s story is a reminder that adaptability, cultural awareness, and giving back are not “soft factors,” but core leadership strengths that shape sustainable success. #Podcast #Westbound #Westboundpodcast #internationalrecruitment #executivesearch #professionalrecruitment #OERTZENGroup #BMO #NadineVaughan Sign up for our new Westbound Podcast Newsletter here: https://share.hsforms.com/17KfE38axSU6lgZmZiVzY4w8nkmq Stay tuned for more podcast episodes here: https://westbound-podcast.castos.com/ Follow us on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@westboundpodcast If you are enjoying the podcast, please subscribe, rate, and leave a review! 19 Westbound Podcast – With Dennis Wagner - CEO - BESTAR Steel Group

In this episode, Matthias Oertzen sits down with Dennis Wagner, CEO of Bestar Steel Group, to explore how he built a thriving U.S. business from scratch and what European leaders need to understand when entering the American market. Dennis’s journey began with an internship in Detroit, where he first encountered U.S. industry dynamics. One early defining moment: he copied the entire Thomas Register and took it back to Germany, using it as the foundation to build Bestar’s U.S. operations one customer at a time. His story is a testament to resourcefulness, determination, and a willingness to start from zero. But this conversation goes far beyond company expansion. We discuss the mindset required to succeed in the U.S. A mindset Dennis summarizes through his core motto: “Ask questions, be curious, and don’t be judgmental when coming to the States.” We also explore the uniquely American “Just do it” attitude and how the U.S. business environment rewards speed, initiative, and entrepreneurial action. Entering the U.S. market means embracing cultural differences, accepting that every company—no matter how big in Europe—starts as a startup, and finding the right local people to build with. We’ll dive into: ✅ How Dennis built Bestar’s U.S. business from the ground up✅ Why curiosity and cultural openness are essential for German companies in America✅ The “Just do it” mindset and the U.S. dynamic that encourages reinvention✅ Why success requires adapting, selling, and starting fresh—no matter your size in Europe✅ The advantages of living between cultures and blending German precision with American momentum If you want to understand what it really takes to be successful as a European company in the United States and how mindset, culture, and action shape transatlantic business, this episode is full of insights you won’t want to miss. #Podcast #Westbound #Westboundpodcast #internationalrecruitment #executivesearch #professionalrecruitment #OERTZENGroup #BESTARSteelGroup #DennisWagner #GermanAmericanCommunity Sign up for our new Westbound Podcast Newsletter here: https://share.hsforms.com/17KfE38axSU6lgZmZiVzY4w8nkmq Stay tuned for more podcast episodes here: https://westbound-podcast.castos.com/ Follow us on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@westboundpodcast If you are enjoying the podcast, please subscribe, rate, and leave a review!
