   #74 - Dana Deffendoll

Welcome to WFPC podcasting. Voting in Pike County actually began on October 6. It continues through November 3 with what traditionally has been known as election day being on the Tuesday following the first Monday of November. The votes should be counted at the end of that day. On my sample ballot for the general election for 2026 we have a choice for Congress between a Republican and Democrat. On the state level, we've got Democrats, Republicans, a couple of libertarians, a Lincoln party candidate and for Pike County, there is one challenged race between a Republican and an independent. There are two unopposed school board candidates, three questions about retaining judges, and three public questions. One is about changing the constitution of the state of in reference to allowing bail or without bond for a suspect.  The second is in reference to a judge of a city or town court. We do not have that system here. But public question number three is receiving a lot of attention. There are about 290 public school corporations in Indiana. 38 of those about 13%, are requesting more tax revenue on a referendum.  Our Pike County school corporation is requesting more money. This is how the question reads: “Shall Pike County School Corporation increase property taxes paid to the school corporation for no more than eight (8) years for the purpose of funding and maintaining daily educational operations, including maintaining operations at existing school buildings, retaining teachers and staff, supporting essential safety initiatives, and providing academic and CTE  (Career and Technical Education) programs and opportunities to meet the learning needs of all students in response to reductions in property tax revenue, by imposing a property tax rate that does not exceed $0.25 and results in a maximum annual amount that does not exceed $2,200,000? If this operating referendum public question is approved by the voters, for a median residence of $150,000, the property's annual property tax bill would increase by $149 per year.” To put your eyes on all of that, sample ballots are available in the Pike County clerks office. Thanks for joining us for a visit with School Superintendent Dana Deffendall to discuss the referendum on WFPC Podcasting!  The program is brought to you by Hathaway Excavating and Rock Yard, Shoultz Eye Care, The Log Ends Farm Bed and Breakfast, The Dustin Schnarr Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance Agency, Harris Real Estate and Petersburg Car Wash.  Please thank our sponsors for their continued investment in Pike County.
