Marcus Aurelius wrote those words to himself, in a private diary, in a war tent, during one of the hardest stretches any Roman emperor ever had to survive.
In this episode of What a Classic!, we head into the reign of Rome's philosopher-emperor: a man raised on Stoic philosophy from boyhood, who never wanted the throne, and who spent nearly twenty years testing whether his own ideas could actually survive contact with reality.

Dacia: Rome's Humiliation and Salvation
How did an emperor desperate to look like a conqueror end up handing his successor an open humiliation to fix?
In this episode of What a Classic!, we head to Dacia, following the war that started as one insecure emperor's unfinished business and ended as another's defining triumph.
It begins with Domitian: a man with no real military record, staging a hollow triumph over a tribe he barely defeated, then getting humiliated for real when Dacia crosses the frozen Danube, kills a Roman governor, and hands Rome one of its worst defeats in a generation. A Roman eagle standard lost, and an emperor forced to pay tribute just to keep the peace. It ends, over twenty years later, with Trajan: a career soldier who refuses to let that humiliation stand, fighting two brutal wars against a king Rome's own historians called a worthy opponent, and coming home with a conquered province, a mountain of gold, and a celebration so large Rome partied for 123 days straight.
We explore:
Domitian's insecure, image-obsessed reign, and how it turned a manageable frontier dispute into a national humiliation
Decebalus, the general turned king who twice used the frozen Danube as a weapon, and built a peace he never intended to keep
Trajan's two Dacian Wars: the permanent bridge, the multi-front conquest, and the dramatic final pursuit that ended in Decebalus's death
This is a story about what it actually costs an empire to save face, and what happens when the right emperor finally decides the bill is worth paying. Rome's most humiliating frontier became its proudest monument, and you can still walk through the proof of it in the middle of Rome today.

Boudica: The Woman Who Nearly Broke Rome
How do you turn one grieving widow's revenge into the closest Rome ever came to losing a province?
In this episode of What a Classic!, we head to Roman Britain for the revolt of Boudica - queen of the Iceni, and the woman behind one of the most serious crises the young province of Britannia ever faced.
Most of us already have some idea of what Boudica looked like: red hair, chariot, warrior queen, furious. The trouble is, we have almost no idea whether any of that's accurate. Nearly everything we know about her comes from Roman men writing about a woman who'd rebelled against their empire - and even they can't agree on some of the most basic details of her story.
We explore:
How a broken promise to a dying king turned into a full-scale rebellion, and why tribes with nothing else in common were willing to join Boudica's cause
How her coalition destroyed three major Roman settlements, defeated part of a Roman legion, and brought Roman Britain closer to collapse than at any other point in its history
Why, despite everything, she lost, and what her defeat actually cost Rome to achieve
Boudica's story doesn't give us a straightforward hero or a straightforward villain. It gives us a queen who was betrayed by the empire she'd stayed loyal to, a revolt that was every bit as brutal as the injustice that caused it, and a legacy that Rome crushed in an afternoon but never came close to controlling afterward.
