S6E3 with John Robb

Regular listeners may remember that we had todays guest on the podcast way back in series 4 episode 1 when he came on to talk about his brilliant book about Goth culture, we had a great old chat and I immediately wanted to invite him back for a longer discussion which is why we are delighted to welcome back, Johnny Robb. John is a musician, writer and punk icon who has finally published his Biography 'Punk rock ruined my life (and other stories)', a musical memoir that flits from one amazing musical moment to another with wit and honesty. As a musician he founded The Membranes and later Goldblade, and as a writer he came up with buzzwords that have literally become dictionary staples like 'Brit-Pop' and 'Grunge'. HIs wit and style make him relatable and entertaining and his memoir reflects that on every page. Welcome to the podcast John Robb.

Hosted on Acast. S6E2 with Martyn 3024

Martyn Deijkers is a DJ, musician and label owner who has quietly built a reputation for innovation and extraordinary craft in the dance music world. Originally from Eindhoven in the Netherlands, Martyn has managed to take his music worldwide, DJing acrosss Europe, and eventually emigrating to Washington D.C. in America. Initial releases some 30 years ago focused on Drum and Bass but his sound really came into its own through the emerging Dubstep scene in the early 2000s. However it quickly became apparent that there was a lot more to Martyn's armoury that any particular genre. He soon established himself as one of the most versatile artists in dance music by creating a string of incredible albums that mixed together House, Techno, Dub-Step and Jazz inflected electronica. Martyn is now fully established as an innovative album orientated artist who commands the ability to take his influences and use them to create new intricate pieces of music as showcased deftly on his latest release 'Music for existing'. Couple all this with his incredible and ground breaking label 3024 which has championed releases from the likes of Marcus Intalex, Leon Vynehall, Om Unit and Addison Groove.

Before we talk to Martyn we talk to author Peter Guralnick about his fascinating book on Col Tom Parker the man who drove Elvis to become the biggest star in the business.

Hosted on Acast. S6E1 with NIGHTMARES ON WAX

Our guest today is George Evelyn aka DJ EASE, he is the songwriter and producer behind the iconic band Nightmares on wax. If like me you came up through the 90s then Nightmares on wax were an inescapable joy that sat alongside Massive Attack, Portishead, DJ Shadow and other legends of the down beat music scene that provided many a soft landing for every raver. Since 1989 George has been creating Jazz inflected, dub tinged, Hip-Hop influenced mood music with a timeless feeling of craft and soul. This 13 album journey has taken him from humble beginnings to sell out shows at Royal The Albert Hall. Nightmares on wax are celebrating the classic albums 'Inna Space - Outta Sound' & 'Smokers Delight' which have matured to an amazing 20 and 30 years respectively. To mark the anniversary of 'Inna Space - Outta Sound' George has commissioned (friend of the pod) and reggae legend Adrian Sherwood to reconstruct the record in his own inimitable style. It is, of course, yet another triumph and a fitting tribute to the legacy of Nightmares on wax. Still moving forward and seemingly still in love with music - we are delighted to welcome George Evelyn to the podcast.

Hosted on Acast.
