The birth of the EU Anti–Money Laundering Authority
Following years of consultations and deliberations, the European Union enacted legislation in 2024 creating the Anti–Money Laundering Authority (AMLA), a new agency that is now starting up its operations in Frankfurt. In January 2028, the AMLA will take over the direct anti–money laundering (AML) supervision of several dozen banks and other entities across the European Union, and will also wield wide powers of oversight of national authorities in charge of AML supervision.
Why and how did the European Union decide to create a new AML supervisor? How can the AMLA increase the effectiveness of the EU AML framework? Will it add complexity to the already crowded landscape of EU financial services authorities, or is there a potential for streamlining AML processes and making them less onerous to European businesses?

The state of the transatlantic security partnership
The policies and pronouncements of the second Trump administration have, to say the least, created strain in the transatlantic relationship, affecting the United States, its allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and the European Union. In parallel to unprecedented trade, investment, and regulatory developments, the security aspects of the relationship have been put into sharp relief by Russia's continued war in Ukraine and increasingly aggressive actions against other European countries.
Is the damage reparable, and if so, under what conditions? How does the current strain affect relations within NATO, and between the European Union, the United Kingdom, and other European countries?
