[…] When I worked in the wind industry, we used that for predicting wind speeds. So we knew the best time to shut down the wind turbines for maintenance. But generative AI, which is what we're all familiar with with chatbots, is the thing that is causing the very significant increase in energy consumption from data centers around the world and why we're seeing fossil fuels filling the gap for that new demand. And that is a very, very different technology. One great metaphor I've heard to describe this is from the journalist Karen Howe, who wrote Empire of AI.
