About Rape | Ep. 15 | What The Guff! | Podcast
Rape. Say it out loud. RAPE. What do we know about rape? That it is probably the most atrocious act a (de)human is capable of? That 2019/20, on average, saw about 6 cases of rapes reported every day in Nepal? That we live in a society that treats the victims of rapes as 'damaged goods'—that is if they are not brutally murdered before we have the good fortune of labeling them that? Or, that 3 days of outrage demanding JUSTICE, in the aftermath of such depravities being headlined by the mainstream media, eclipses public discourse and constructive conversations aimed at stamping out deep-rooted causes of rapes and related horrors? Well, "बलात्कारीलाई फाँसी दे" sure is a good place to start. But is that it? What about the centuries of patriarchy that has led to dehumanization of generations of women paving the way for emotionally-dead savages to exert their putative superiority and dominance onto others in the most inhuman way thinkable? What about the concept of consent that seems to be non-existent? Or, the fact that our legal system decided to wait until 2020 to recognize that men and boys could be victims of rapes as well? Or, the notion of marital rape—that people seem to find laughable rather than grave? Let's talk about it. Disclaimer: All the views and arguments are our own, some well-informed, some less so. The point is not to demonstrate our expertise about the issue but to contribute to and continue the discussion on it. About Social Dilemma | Ep. 14 | What The Guff! | Podcast
#Socialdilemma #AI #NepaliPodcast #Ep14 Contrary to their own words, the makers of 'The Social Dilemma' relentlessly paint a picture that shouts one-sided gloom and doom. The highly dramatized documentary was released on Netflix this September and we wouldn't really blame you if you missed it. It is, after all, only one in a long list of putative eye-openers—The Creepy Line, Terms and Agreements May Apply, The Great Hack, to name a few. All with the same broad message—there is more to social media than connecting like-minded people. In this episode, we present our take on the documentary and the possible ramifications of such algorithmic recommendation engines on the Nepali society. We have barely seen the tip of the iceberg of the intolerance and polarization that can be bred through the social media platforms we find our lives so intertwined with—hopefully, we never have to. And what does it take to prepare yourself for that? All of that in this episode. Disclaimer: All the views and arguments are our own, some well-informed, some less so. About Youth & Politics
About Youth & Politics Politics comes from the Greek word Politiká, meaning 'affairs of the cities'. From 'affairs of the cities' to 'a dirty game'. Talk about the downgrade. And while Aristotle had an absolute flair for romanticizing otherwise boring proceedings, we don't. You. Me. All of us. We despise politics, more so the political parties and the leaders. Quick to blame, quicker to shame, and come every 5 years, we end up voting for the same. Repeat. So in this episode, hear us talk about our shared frustrations about the state of our national politics and how the indifference of the youth only ends up exacerbating it. We get the leaders we deserve, and we will not deserve better until we educate ourselves better. So, episode 12 of What The Guff, here's to being more politically aware. About College Life | Ep. 10 | What The Guff! | Podcast
About "College Life" Made it to the 10th episode. Woohoo!! Who would have thought? Celebrations aside, in this episode, we talk about our college life with our in-house motivational speaker. We did this episode, in part, to show off that we all went to and have graduated from college. And then, reminiscing the glory days, the fun, the friends, them "sugar, spice, everything nice" moments. Finishing that off with a TED Talk that absolutely no one asked for. About Nepali Festivals | Ep. 09 | What The Guff! | Podcast
About Nepali Festivals It is believed that the festive season in Nepal begins with the Shrawan Sakranti and then practically never ends. In this week's episode, we talk about the love/no-love relation we have with the festivals in Nepal. The flavor and the fun, the rituals and the rang and tons of delicious cuisines. But the essence of the celebrations has been changing over the last several years, for the better or the worse. What do you make of that? What are your favorite festivals? About "After Lockdown" | Ep. 08 | What The Guff! | Podcast
#AfterLockdown #NepaliPodcast #Ep08 #WhatTheGuff About "After Lockdown" Okay well, for a while there, it almost had us, didn't it? We all thought we were done with the lockdown and COVID was gone and life was about to go to normal. Whatever normal is. Guess we jinxed it. But eventually it is going to go away. No? I mean it has to, right? For now, hear us ramble about what we think is going to linger around and what we are going to move away from when (or if) the pandemic ultimately subsides. We have disappointed ourselves in ways we always used to in the past and we have also taken strides that we can be proud of during the last 4 odd months. But what stays? What goes? About Mental Health | Ep. 05 | What The Guff! | Podcast
About Mental Health The lockdown has brought to surface a lot of our tendencies, both negative and positive, while exacerbating several others that might or might not be visible on the surface. In today's episode, we talk about how the pandemic, and the subsequent lockdown, might be worsening or putting to test the mental health of countless Nepalis around the world. Losing structure, balance and the much-needed social touch can potentially have impacts on our individual and collective psyche much worse than the physical manifestations that the virus can have. Disclaimer: We apologize if any of today's content has hurt or disrespected anyone in any possible way. The goal with today's episode was not to demonstrate our proficiency in regards to issues surrounding mental wellbeing but to initiate a conversation on them. This episode is not exhaustive and we invite all of you to build on this and help eliminate the shame attached with mental illnesses. The need of the hour is not to stigmatize or romanticize those with mental illnesses but to create enough space to normalize the dialogues around them and promote collective mental wellbeing. We are focusing on how individuals can take charge of their own mental health and that of the ones closest to them. On a broader scale, community interventions, support groups and therapeutic efforts through mainstream media, among others, can potentially be effective measures to tackle mental illnesses. Read this report by the Centre for Mental Health and Counselling - Nepal (CMC-Nepal) on how community scale psychological interventions helped relieve the post-traumatic stress disorder, stress and anxiety, among others, in thousands of survivors of the 2015 Earthquake: http://www.cmcnepal.org.np/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Report-on-PSI-of-Earthquake-Survivors.pdf (http://www.cmcnepal.org.np/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Report-on-PSI-of-Earthquake-Survivors.pdf?fbclid=IwAR3X-fZBYMn2LTbCgT7gWShAw5a-6gSwZ9aFip4dxAihai7Rns56-SelxHw)

About Online Journalism | Ep. 04 | What The Guff! | Podcast
About Online Journalism In this episode, listen to us talk about why we think clickbait is ruining what honest journalism is trying to deliver. What is it about clickbait that we always end up falling for the bait despite having been tricked into it countless times before? Is this what online journalism was always supposed to be? And why are we running the risk of manufacturing our own Arnab Goswamis? And where is all this leading to next? Hate speech? Hate crimes? Frustrating. Disclaimer: We are just speaking our minds and do not want to influence any of your minds. Make your own decision, like you always should.

About Quarantine | Ep. 01 | What The Guff! | Podcast
In this episode, we talk about quarantine, but not the dull, dim and grim quarantine stuff about infected cases and fatalities. Listen to the podcast to find out how we manage to talk about Bhim Niroula, the Great Nepali Internet and ISP Scam and the Tamilnadu Police in the same episode. The episode was sponsored by you know who 😉 'What The Guff!'--just another weekly podcast experimenting with the perfect amount of cringe, awkward pauses and laughter.
