Ep31 | Immune System Part 2 - Meet the Team

Your immune system is an incredible team of cells working together to protect your body! 🦠🛡️ But how do all those immune cells know what to do—and how do they work together to fight germs? In Part 2 of our Immune System series, we’re diving deeper into the amazing world of white blood cells! Join Audra, Sloane, and Ransom as we meet more of the immune system’s key players and discover how they communicate, coordinate, and protect us. We’ll learn about neutrophils, the quick responders that help kill germs; macrophages, the cells that gobble up germs and damaged cells; and dendritic cells, which gather information about germs and share it with other immune cells. Then we’ll meet lymphocytes, including B cells and T cells, and explore how they help the immune system respond to specific threats. Plus, what exactly are antibodies? How do they recognize a particular target called an antigen? And why are antibodies more like labels that help the immune system identify a target than little germ-fighting warriors themselves? We’ll break it down with a kid-friendly lock-and-key explanation! Along the way, we’ll review how the immune system works as a team—and introduce an important idea that sets the stage for our upcoming mini-series on celiac disease and autoimmune diseases. 🎧 Whether your child is curious about germs, white blood cells, antibodies, or what happens inside their body when they get sick, this episode is a fun way to explore real science together! In this episode, kids will learn about: The immune system and how white blood cells (leukocytes) protect the body Cytokines and chemokines: chemical messages that help immune cells communicate Neutrophils, macrophages, and dendritic cells Lymphocytes, including B cells and T cells Antibodies, antigens, and how the immune system recognizes specific targets Autoimmune diseases and a preview of our upcoming celiac disease series What’s Happening Inside Me? is a science and health podcast for curious kids ages 4–12, helping children understand the anatomy, physiology, and medical science happening inside their own bodies.
