Healing in Harmony: An Artist Bridging Performance, Education, and Healing
San Jose–based performer, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and educator, Verlene Schermer brings a deeply expressive and wide-ranging approach to music that spans performance, songwriting, recording, and teaching. A lifelong musician, she performs throughout the United States and Europe, accompanying her vocals on harp, guitar, and piano while also playing a diverse collection of traditional stringed instruments from around the world. In addition to her work as a performer and educator, Verlene serves as a harpist with Stanford Health Care’s Creative & Healing Arts program, where she uses music to support healing, reflection, and connection for patients, families, and caregivers. Grounded in Care: Kimberley Reed's Blend of Clinical Excellence and Creative Healing
Kimberley Reed, a Clinical Nurse II in the Cardiac ICU, findsgrounding and restoration through creative, tactile practices that engage both her mind and body. She is deeply drawn to sound healing, embracing its calming and centering effects as a counterbalance to the demands of critical care. Kimberlyalso enjoys baking and crocheting. For her, the repetitive, sensory motions of her fingers are a form of therapeutic release, reflecting a belief in the healing power of creativity, touch, and mindful presence both inside and beyond the ICU. Music in Medicine: Turning Neuroscience and Listening into Healing
Dr. Dan Bowling is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Stanford School of Medicine and Director of the Music, Brain & Health Lab. His translational research is focused on understanding how music helps people feel and function better and turning that knowledge into tools that lower the bar to more reliable therapeutic listening. His approach integrates expertise in neuroscience, bioacoustics, music therapy, and technology to apply insights from music's underlying biology to medicine. Dan earned his PhD in Neurobiology from Duke University and holds graduate certificates in Cognitive Neuroscience and Translational Medicine. He has authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals including Science, PNAS, and Molecular Psychiatry.
