I am from divorce and remarriages
From New York and Cambridge.
Tall buildings and back yards, new schools and new friends
I am from sand and the ocean
Warm and cold
From Islands surrounded by the dark Atlantic and the bright Pacific
From strength and laughter
From watching TV with my husband, daughters, and dogs on the couch
Loud, cozy, and messy
I’m from red wrapping paper for Christmas and lamb for Greek Easter
From my red hair and freckles
I’m from UCC church retreats and youth pilgrimages
I’m from quilting, reading, and teaching
I’m from New Haven and my grandmother’s name

From the wedding quilt I made for Matt. The one that made him cry.

I am from paper plates
from Thomas’s English muffins and white label, no name ketchup
I am from the first floor apartment with the long hallway and the dining table where cigarettes were tamped out in the skin of mostly eaten baked potatoes
I am from grass outside the building and sweet gum trees with spiky balls that were used as weapons
I am from weekend breakfasts at the Broadway diner, sarcasm and questions about the cost of breakfast
I am from Hugh and Trudy, from the arguing and the ignoring
from “your father doesn’t care about me” and “Kid your mother is crazy”
from a lapsed Catholic father and a mom who was sad and angry at Christmas for many years and tried really hard
I am from the Bronx, New York, Ireland and Latvia, from the Jewish Federation Home for Girls (where my mom learned she was smart)
from entenmann’s chocolate covered donuts, frozen french fries, and london broil
I am from my dad sitting me down at 12 years old, “I’m an alcoholic. Here’s what that is - it’s a disease. The place I go on Saturday nights every month is to help people who are really sick with the disease. I will always have the disease even though I don’t drink anymore. I go to meetings and people help me.”
I am from service, despair, devotion, dreams. From early love, from 10 people sharing DNA, walking the earth with stories of the battles and beauty of Hugh and Trudy

I am from sunshine and citrus groves,
porch swings and sweet tea.
I am from azalea bushes blooming vividly in my backyard.
bursting fuchsia petals, just in time for Easter.
I am from orange blossoms
a harbinger for good luck, health and fertility.
I’m from pot roast dinners and scenic drives on lazy Sunday afternoons.
From Elsie Mae and Rodgers.
I’m from briny bootleggers and suntanned cotton farmers.
From “You’re as good as the best, and better than the rest!”
I’m from family night suppers and vacation bible school at First Baptist Church,
hand bells and choir rehearsals.
I’m from the heart of Florida and a Revolutionary War soldier.
fried pork chops with rice and tomato gravy.
From my mother’s fingers stained with permanent wave lotion,
to the varicose veins in her legs, brought on by standing long hours at the beauty salon.
Large plastic bins, underneath my bed,
contain hundreds of family photos, past and present.
Births, deaths, marriages, divorces.
I am the sum of all the faces and places.
Memories, past and present, reminding me of who I am today.
