The State of Memphis: Tigers, Grizzlies, Penny, Paul Young & Falling Crime | WIA - Ep10

Where It’s At hits double digits! For Episode 10, J.R. Moore, Alex Rasmussen, and Greg Graber celebrate the milestone by looking back at the first 10 episodes—and then jump straight into a packed show covering Memphis football, Tigers basketball, a massive SEC showdown in Oxford, the return of the Grizzlies, the latest conversations surrounding the city, and one music controversy that somehow found its way onto a Memphis podcast. Memphis Football: 2–1… So How Worried Should We Be?After a 38–20 road loss at Boise State, the Tigers sit at 2–1—but the final score doesn't tell the whole story. Memphis surrendered 352 rushing yards and failed to score in the second half, while Marcus Stokes and Hunter Tipton delivered huge individual performances. With a roster loaded with newcomers and Charles Huff still building his program, the guys debate whether Memphis fans should be concerned or simply patient. Memphis Basketball Is Back in the GymPractice is underway, which means expectations for Penny Hardaway and the Tigers are officially back. What would make this season a success? How much pressure is on Penny? And should Memphis measure itself against the AAC—or against the national standard fans believe the program should reach? The guys make their early predictions before the season gets underway. LSU vs. Ole Miss: Lane Kiffin Returns to OxfordOne of college football’s biggest games of the weekend is happening just down the road from Memphis as No. 7 LSU travels to Oxford to face No. 8 Ole Miss. But this isn’t just another chapter in the LSU–Ole Miss rivalry. Lane Kiffin returns to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium for the first time as LSU’s head coach after leaving Ole Miss, adding another layer to a matchup already loaded with SEC and College Football Playoff implications. With College GameDay in town and Oxford preparing for an electric Saturday night, the guys break down the matchup, the atmosphere, and just how wild Kiffin’s return could get. The Grizzlies Are Almost BackNBA basketball is right around the corner, and it's time to figure out what this new version of the Memphis Grizzlies can become. Who enters camp with the most pressure? Which player are the guys most excited to see? What needs to change after last season? And what would it take to believe in the Grizzlies again? Plus, the crew makes some way-too-early win predictions. Paul Young vs. Social MediaMemphis Mayor Paul Young's response to online criticism sparks a larger discussion about politicians, authenticity, and social media. Do people really want elected officials to speak like normal people—or only when they agree with what's being said? The guys discuss the line between being authentic, defending yourself, and allowing online battles to become a distraction from governing. Ed Sheeran, Macklemore & Who Controls the Stage? The conversation moves outside Memphis after Macklemore was removed from the U.S. leg of Ed Sheeran's tour following his pro-Palestinian remarks. Rather than trying to solve an international conflict in one podcast segment, the guys focus on the debate surrounding artists, promoters, venues, political expression, and control of the platform. How much freedom should an artist have on someone else's tour—and can the headliner really remain neutral when their name is on the marquee? Memphis Crime Is Down—Are We Willing to Admit It?The episode closes with an important conversation about Memphis and crime. Reported crime has been moving in the right direction, even as public perception of the city remains difficult to change. If we're willing to criticize Memphis when the numbers get worse, are we equally willing to acknowledge progress when they improve? The guys dig into why perception can lag behind reality, who deserves credit, what still isn't good enough, and how long positive trends need to continue before people truly believe Memphis is changing. And the bigger question: What could Memphis look like five years from now if that prog

Charles Huff & Memphis Football, World Cup Aftermath, Live Music & Rage Bait Culture | WIA - Ep09

Where It’s At – Episode 09 asks a simple question with a much bigger answer: Who’s actually building Memphis? Hosted by J.R. Moore, Alex Rasmussen, and Greg Graber, this episode looks beyond the headlines and comment sections to the people, businesses, teams, and ideas creating real community in Memphis. From lessons learned during the World Cup to the excitement surrounding Tigers football, a growing live music scene, and new concepts breathing life into the city, Episode 09 is all about the difference between talking about Memphis and actually participating in its future. World Cup Aftermath: What Comes Next? With the World Cup over, the guys look back at the tournament’s biggest moments, surprises, and lasting impact. Did soccer permanently gain ground in America, or was it a six-week phenomenon? More importantly, can Memphis turn that enthusiasm into something lasting through youth participation, local teams, and a stronger soccer community? The conversation leads to a larger point: sports matter most when they give people a reason to come together. Memphis vs. Europe: Where Do We Build Community?Greg’s time in Europe sparks one of the episode’s deeper conversations: Why do some cities seem designed for human connection while American cities can feel increasingly isolated? From walkability and public squares to neighborhood pubs, cafés, Tiger games, and Grizzlies games, the hosts explore where Memphians actually gather—and whether restaurants, nightlife, sports, and local businesses can create genuine belonging. If you moved to Memphis today knowing nobody, where would you go to find your community? Builders vs. Critics: Has Negativity Taken Over? The conversation shifts to outrage, rage bait, and a media culture where negativity often earns more attention than optimism. Greg discusses criticism surrounding sports and entertainment, while J.R. highlights Memphis reporter Jessica Benson and her approach to discovering local experiences and celebrating the city she now calls home. Is criticism necessary for progress? Absolutely—but when does criticism stop being constructive and become the easiest thing in the world to do? Memphis Tigers Football: A New EraThe guys turn their attention to college sports and the excitement surrounding Charles Huff and Memphis Tigers football. With a vocal, no-nonsense head coach setting expectations high, the crew breaks down the upcoming season, players to watch, the atmosphere surrounding Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, and the bigger question: Can Memphis establish itself as a consistent Top-25 football program? Memphis Music, Nightlife & Places That Bring Us TogetherFrom Satellite Music Hall and the Graceland Soundstage to The Green Room, Minglewood Hall, Overton Park Shell, and Alex’s latest Country Club update, Memphis’ live entertainment landscape is evolving. Why are midsize venues finding an audience? And can live music, dancing, and uniquely Memphis experiences help bring different generations back together in the same room? Episode 09 ultimately comes back to one idea: great cities aren't built from the sidelines. The future of Memphis won’t be determined by the loudest voices in the comment section. It’ll be shaped by the people willing to open businesses, coach teams, create art, support local ideas, build new experiences, and give people a reason to come together. Every great city is built by people who decide to participate. 🎙️ Where It’s At — honest conversations about Memphis culture, sports, music, business, and the people shaping what comes next. Goodbye Ja Morant, World Cup Fever, Hockey in Memphis & The City's Future | WIA - Ep08

Where It’s At – Episode 08 | Memphis is standing at a crossroads. With the excitement of the World Cup, major private investment, new entertainment ventures, and a changing sports landscape, the city has an opportunity to redefine its future—but only if vision, leadership, and execution come together. Hosted by J.R. Moore, Alex Rasmussen, and Greg Graber, Episode 08 takes a look at where Memphis has been, where it's headed, and what it will take to capitalize on this moment. Goodbye to Ja Morant: The End of an Era The guys open the show by reflecting on the end of the Ja Morant era following his trade to Portland. Rather than debating the move, they celebrate one of the most electrifying players in franchise history—from Rookie of the Year and unforgettable highlight plays to playoff heroics, Memphis swagger, and the heartbreaking off-court issues that ultimately derailed what once looked like a championship window. The discussion ends with one question every Grizzlies fan has to answer: Was Ja Morant the greatest Grizzly ever, the most talented, or the biggest "what if" in Memphis sports history? World Cup Fever & What Memphis Can Learn As the World Cup captures the world's attention, the hosts discuss the tournament's biggest surprises, standout players, and why soccer has finally become a mainstream American sport. More importantly, they explore what Memphis can learn from successful host cities and how global events can reshape a city's reputation and economy. Politics, Leadership & Memphis' Future From recent elections in New York City to conversations surrounding local leadership in Memphis, the crew examines how policy decisions shape cities over time. They discuss accountability, civic leadership, and why strong leadership matters just as much as strong ideas. Can Memphis Become a Hockey City? Alex shares exciting updates on the Mid-South Monarchs and his vision for bringing professional hockey back to Memphis. The conversation expands beyond the rink into creating affordable family entertainment, building community, and developing a long-term destination that can energize the city for years to come. Country Club: Where the South Comes to Dance The team provides an update on Country Club, a new entertainment concept designed to become a true Memphis destination. With live music, dancing, VIP experiences, and a vision inspired by—but not copied from—cities like Nashville, the discussion centers on why Memphis should build its own identity instead of chasing someone else's. Justin's Memphis Minute & A New Look at the Bluff City Justin highlights upcoming concerts, restaurants, and events happening around town before the conversation turns to Peter Santenello's nationally recognized Memphis documentary. The hosts discuss what the series got right, what it overlooked, and why authentic storytelling matters for a city that too often finds itself defined by headlines instead of its people. From sports and entertainment to leadership and city-building, Episode 08 explores what could be one of the most important chapters in Memphis' future. The opportunities are real—the question is whether the city is ready to seize them. 🎙️ Where It's At is your home for honest conversations about Memphis culture, sports, business, music, and the people shaping the future of the 901. State Takes Over Memphis Schools, Grizzlies to Nashville? Media, Conspiracies, & More | WIA - Ep07

Where It’s At – Episode 07 dives into one of the biggest questions facing Memphis today: Who’s actually in control of the city’s future? Hosted by J.R. Moore, Alex Rasmussen, and Greg Graber, this episode explores the growing tension between local identity and outside influence—from the NBA and state government to national media narratives and public perception. Grizzlies in Nashville: Expansion or Warning Sign? The episode opens with a heated discussion around Adam Silver floating the possibility of NBA games in Nashville. Is this really about “growing the market,” or is it a quiet test run for something bigger? The hosts break down what Nashville’s corporate power and economic growth could mean for Memphis—and whether the Grizzlies could eventually become vulnerable to relocation conversations down the line. Schools, State Control & Leadership VacuumsAlex leads a deeper conversation about state involvement in Memphis schools and the broader issue of local control. The debate isn’t just political—it’s about competence, outcomes, and what happens when leadership gaps invite outside intervention. Are these systems actually being fixed, or is responsibility simply shifting hands? Memphis Narrative vs. Memphis RealityGreg examines how Memphis is portrayed nationally versus what people actually experience. From television shows casually using Memphis as a crime punchline, to social profiling experiments, to conversations about exclusivity and access in sports and entertainment, the hosts unpack how perception layers shape the city’s reputation—often more powerfully than reality itself. Conspiracy Corner: Weather, Tornadoes & DistrustThe guys head into conspiracy territory with discussions around weather modification theories, tornado patterns, and why distrust in institutions fuels modern speculation. The segment becomes less about conspiracies themselves—and more about why people gravitate toward explanations that feel emotionally satisfying in uncertain times. One Night at Minglewood HallThe episode closes with Greg recounting a night at Minglewood Hall that perfectly captures Memphis energy: unpredictable, chaotic, raw, and impossible to replicate anywhere else. It becomes a larger reflection on why some people fall in love with Memphis—and why others can’t wait to leave. At its core, Episode 07 is about power, perception, and identity. Memphis isn’t just battling one issue—it’s navigating thousands of small pressures pulling at what the city is, and what it could become. 🎙️ Where It’s At continues to bring honest conversations about Memphis culture, sports, business, and the forces shaping the future of the 901.
