The Book of Job: Practical Theodicy
This week we move from one difficult book to another. In Ecclesiastes we dealt with a number of issues that are universal to the human experience: The inability of worldly pleasures to satisfy us, and the tension that exists in a world where the wicked seem to fare just as well as those who strive to do good. We saw a man who acquired things, great wealth, family, possessions and positions. We saw him flounder, finding everything, ultimately, to be meaningless, a chasing after the wind. He deemed only one thing to be worthwhile, obedience to God. Now, we turn to Job. A man who had everything – and lost it. It’s here that we find a deep-rooted and practical theodicy – a theology of suffering. When bad things happen to us – we ask the same question that Job and all of his friends were asking: Why? We ask this question, not into the void – but to God. Join us as we explore Ecclesiastes’ opposite. -Pastor Nate Roschen

Ecclesiastes - Chasing After the Wind - Chapters 6-12
The second half of Ecclesiastes repeats many of the same themes from the first – but it does so in a way that leads to its ultimate conclusion. The book has a lot to say about all that is not worthy of our time – our attention – our drive. In this way, it is a “negative” book in that it highlights many of the problems and shortcomings in our lives. But – at the end, Solomon, Qoholet, the author of our book, comes to the conclusion that there is one thing that is not, is never, meaningless vanity – obedience to God. That is something that we would all agree with, at least on paper. Whether we live that out in our lives is another thing entirely. But this is why Ecclesiastes was written – in the hopes that we could learn from someone who tried it all and was left wanting. Ecclesiastes - Chasing After the Wind - Chapter 5
Ecclesiastes 5 seems like a departure. The author has continually highlighted all that is meaningless and vain. In the previous chapter, he speaks to oppression and corruption – saying it is so bad that it would be better to not be alive to see it. Chapter 5 follows all of this, and the calmness, the wisdom, the proverbial nature of it is striking. Here, the author lays out some thoughts on how to respond. He offers advice. Having acknowledged that so much is broken and seemingly beyond repair, “What is crooked cannot be straightened; what is lacking cannot be counted” (Eccl. 1:15). He speaks now to making the most of what we have – doing what we can, what is actually meaningful – a life with God. Join us, as we continue our study of Ecclesiastes this week! -Pastor Nate Roschen
