#16 When You Can’t Even Pray: How Christ Comes to You Anyway | Luke 7
She never prayed. She never asked. She didn’t even look up. A widow is walking behind the coffin of her only son out of the gate of Nain, and Jesus stops anyway. He sees her, is moved with compassion, touches the coffin, and says: “Young man, I say to you, arise.”
In this episode, we walk verse by verse through Luke 7:11-17, one of the most tender and theologically rich miracles in the Gospels. Why did Jesus touch what Jewish law called unclean? Why does He raise the dead with His own authority when Elijah and Elisha had to pray? And what does this miracle preview about Pascha and our own resurrection?
We read it with the Church Fathers: St. Cyril of Alexandria on life flowing from Christ into death, St. Gregory of Nyssa on Nain as a rehearsal for the Resurrection, St. Ephraim the Syrian’s unforgettable line, “The Virgin’s son met the widow’s son,” St. Augustine of Hippo on the three raisings and the stages of sin, and St. Ambrose of Milan on the Church weeping like a mother over her children.
In this episode you will discover:
Why Christ comes uninvited when you can’t even pray
What first-century widows, biers, and burial outside the gate tell us about her loss
How confession is Christ touching the bier of your own sin
If you’ve ever felt carried outside the gate like that young man, whether by heart-sin, acted sin, or habitual sin, this is for you. There is no grave Christ cannot stop for.

#15 They Caught Everything. Then Left It All Behind | Luke 5
Join us in Luke 5:1-11, where tired fishermen are washing their nets after a long night of catching nothing. Then a Teacher who isn’t a fisherman climbs into Simon’s boat and tells him to go back out into the deep. One word of obedience, “nevertheless,” brings in a catch so big it nearly sinks two boats, and it brings Peter to his knees. With the Church Fathers as our guides, we see why a miracle made Peter afraid, what it means to be caught alive by Christ, and why these men left the best catch of their lives on the shore.

#14 I and My Father Are One | John 10
Join us in John 10:22–38, where it is winter in Jerusalem and a crowd surrounds Jesus in Solomon's Porch during the Feast of Dedication with a demand that sounds like honest curiosity: "If You are the Christ, tell us plainly." It isn't. He answers with sheep, a hand no one can snatch them from, and four words that send them reaching for stones. With the Church Fathers as our guides, we walk through the most contested sentence in the Gospels and find what Christ is really saying in it: why He points to His works instead of giving them a title, why the Son is God by nature and not by promotion, and why the men holding the stones understood Him perfectly. Anyone can make a claim. What cannot be faked is nature.

#13 Be Watchful — No One Knows the Day | Mark 13
Join us in Mark 13:3–37, where four disciples pull Jesus aside on the Mount of Olives and ask Him the most natural question there is — when? — and He refuses to answer it, giving them a single word instead. With the Church Fathers as our guides, we walk through the longest stretch of teaching in Mark's Gospel — one of the most misread passages in the whole Bible — and find what Christ is really doing in it: why He hides the day, how the Son can say even He does not know it, and why the hiding was never Him keeping something from us, but a mercy. The date was never ours to read. Only one thing is asked of us — to stay awake.

#12 Sick, Not Sentenced | Luke 5
Join us in Luke 5:27–39, where Jesus walks up to a tax booth — to a man his own religion had ruled to be walking contamination — and says two words. Follow Me. No cleaning up first. With the Church Fathers as our guides, we find what Christ said He was doing at that table: not judging the room, but treating it. Nobody here is barred from the feast. But you have to say where it hurts.

#11 I AM the Resurrection and the Life | John 11
Join us in John 11:1–45 as Jesus hears that the friend He loves is dying—and waits. Two days of silence. Four days in the tomb. Then, to a grieving Martha, He declares: “I AM the resurrection and the life.”
Guided by the Church Fathers, we explore the delay that was love in disguise, the God who weeps at the tomb He is about to empty, and the voice of creation calling Lazarus by name. The resurrection is not merely an event. It is a Person—and He is still asking: Do you believe this?

#10 Who Then Is Greatest | Matthew 18
Join us in Matthew 18:1–9, where the disciples come to Jesus with a question they were too ashamed to ask honestly: "who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" and He answers by standing a child in the midst of them: the one figure in that world with no status, no honour, and nothing to repay. With the Church Fathers as our guides, we get past the greeting-card version of "become like little children" and find what this passage really is: one unbroken argument about greatness, from the child to the millstone to the severed limb. The kingdom has no leaderboard for the proud; the question is not who ranks highest, but who enters at all. And the little ones the world overlooks? Heaven guards them with a millstone. Whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

#9 - Sons of the Most High | Luke 6
Join us in Luke 6:27–38, where Jesus takes the hardest commands in the Gospel — love your enemies, turn the other cheek, give without hope of return, judge no one — and reveals what they are actually for. With the Church Fathers as our guides, we get past the idea that this is a code for being "nice" and find the promise buried in the middle of it: that everyone who lives this way "will be sons of the Most High." Each command turns out to be a feature of the Father's own face — mercy to the ungrateful, kindness to the enemy, an open hand to the poor — and to wear them is to carry the family resemblance. This isn't a call to be a doormat. It's an invitation into the family. Be merciful, as your Father is merciful.

#8 Take Up Your Bed | Luke 5
Join us in a packed house in Capernaum, where friends tear open a roof to lay a paralyzed man at Jesus' feet. Before He heals the man's body, He forgives his soul, and He does it in front of scribes who know full well that only God can forgive sins. With the Church Fathers as our guides, we walk through the passage and get past the miracle to what it's really about: that Christ forgives sins "on earth," while the gate is still open, and that He sends the healed man home. All the way home, to Paradise. Take up your bed, and go home.

#7 He Looked Up Toward Heaven | Luke 9
The only miracle outside the Resurrection recorded by all four Gospels. We slow down in the wilderness of Bethsaida and let the Fathers show us what is really happening — not just a feeding miracle, but a Eucharistic icon performed in broad daylight, before five thousand people.

#6 Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled | John 14
Join us as we sit with the Church Fathers in John 14:1–11, spoken into the heaviest room in the Gospels — the Upper Room on the night of the Last Supper. Into the silence of men who are confused, frightened, and quietly falling apart, Christ speaks eleven verses of the most theologically dense consolation in all of Scripture. From the many mansions of the Father’s house to the stunning self-declaration “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life,” this episode walks through what it means to know the Way you have already been given, and why the going away of Christ is not abandonment — but preparation.

#5 The Eighth Day | John 20
Join us as we sit with the Church Fathers in John 20:1–18, and question, what is the eighth day and why does the Church keep returning to it? From circumcision to Resurrection, from the Transfiguration to the eternal Sabbath — this episode traces one of the most profound theological numbers in all of Scripture and Tradition. The eighth day is not after history. It is history's destination.

#4 Thirst for Living Water | John 4
Join us as we sit with the Church Fathers in John 4:1–42, where Christ meets the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s Well and reveals Himself as the giver of living water. In this encounter, centuries of division between Samaria and Judea give way to the deeper thirst of the human soul. As the Lord gently uncovers the woman’s life and proclaims that true worship is in spirit and truth, shame becomes witness and seekers become harvesters. From the leaving of the water jar to the fields already white for harvest, this episode reflects on how the Messiah satisfies our deepest thirst and calls us to share in the work of the Father.

#3 The Law Giver Under the Law | Luke 2
Join us as we sit with the Church Fathers in Luke 2:21–39, where the Lawgiver humbles Himself under His own Law and the Old Covenant hands its hope to the New. From the eighth day to the fortieth—from circumcision to presentation—we explore how Christ fulfills and transcends the Law, revealing the mystery of spiritual circumcision, the poverty of the Incarnation, and the meeting of promise and fulfillment in the Temple. From Simeon’s long-awaited embrace of Salvation to the sword of love foretold to the Theotokos, this episode shows how submission becomes redemption—and how presenting ourselves to God is the path to peace.

#2 He Must Increase: Joy, Rivalry, and the Voice of the Bridegroom | John 3
Join us as we sit with the Church Fathers in John 3:22–36, where, in a world shaped by reputation, rivalry, and public recognition, John the Baptist points beyond himself. We explore the cultural weight of the "friend of the bridegroom," the Orthodox understanding of joy as self-emptying, and how the Church Fathers read John's decrease as the model of every Christian life. What does it look like to genuinely want another to surpass you?
