Whispers From The Dark

About Whispers From The Dark

Whispers From the Dark is a cinematic true crime, paranormal, urban legend, and unexplained mysteries podcast hosted by Jeremy Hanson — “The Whisper Man.” Some stories are frightening because they are legends. Others are frightening because they actually happened. Each episode of Whispers From the Dark takes listeners deep inside the disturbing stories hiding in America’s shadows: unsolved murders, mysterious disappearances, haunted locations, terrifying urban legends, alleged demonic encounters, occult mysteries, cryptids, unexplained deaths, paranormal investigations, historical horrors, and real events that continue to generate questions decades later. Jeremy Hanson brings these stories to life as The Whisper Man, combining deep narrative storytelling, atmospheric sound design, historical research, documented accounts, eyewitness claims, folklore, and cinematic production. But Whispers From the Dark doesn't stop with the story everyone already knows. We dig into what happened before the legend was born. What did witnesses actually report? Which parts are documented? Which details became folklore? What disappeared from the official story? And sometimes the most disturbing question of all: What if the legend isn't entirely a legend? From abandoned hospitals and haunted asylums to forgotten American towns, back roads, forests, crime scenes, supernatural encounters, Ouija board stories, demonic folklore, strange creatures, cold cases, and mysteries that have never been satisfactorily explained, The Whisper Man searches for the truth buried beneath decades of rumor, fear, secrecy, and silence. If you listen to podcasts about true crime, unsolved mysteries, paranormal activity, haunted places, American urban legends, cryptids, supernatural encounters, demonic cases, occult history, missing persons, unexplained deaths, or dark history, Whispers From the Dark was made for you. This isn't a campfire story. This is where the campfire story came from. Hosted by Jeremy Hanson “The Whisper Man.” New episodes of Whispers From the Dark explore the stories people were told to forget — and the things that refuse to stay buried. Enter the dark. Follow the evidence. Question the story. Listen for the whispers.

The Things the Law Cannot Name: The Disappearance of Dennis Martin

On Father's Day weekend in 1969, six-year-old Dennis Martin stepped behind a bush on Spence Field, a grassy bald high in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, to surprise the grown-ups with his brother and two friends. He was wearing a bright red shirt. The other boys jumped out. Dennis never did. Within hours a storm dropped roughly three inches of rain on the mountain, and by morning every track he might have left was gone. What followed was the largest search in the history of the park: about 1,400 searchers, Green Berets pulled from nearby training exercises, FBI agents, bloodhounds, Army helicopters and the National Guard, covering 56 square miles. They found a child-sized set of footprints, one bare and one in an Oxford shoe, that led to a stream and stopped. A highway engineer named Harold Key reported hearing a sickening scream that same afternoon and seeing a rough, shaggy man moving behind the leaves miles away. Years later a ginseng hunter claimed he had found a small child's skeleton in Big Hollow near Tremont and kept quiet for more than a decade. Host Jeremy Hanson follows the case through the FBI files released in 2022, the 1978 prison informant who claimed a cellmate kidnapped and sold Dennis, and a father who never stopped looking. Then he goes further back, to 1541, when English law still named witchcraft as a crime, to 1735, when the law stopped naming it, and into the Cherokee stories of Spearfinger and the giant Tsul'kalu that walked these same ridges long before any ranger. Dennis Martin has never been found.

The Wolves of Paris: Courtaud and the Fear Eaters

Autumn, 1439. Outside the crumbling walls of Paris, in the vineyards below Montmartre and the marshes by the Porte Saint-Antoine, wolves kill fourteen people in a single week, their bodies torn open and left in the vines, the flesh ripped apart and never eaten. A chronicler inside the city writes that when they found a shepherd with his flock, they took the shepherd and left the sheep untouched. One wolf rises above the rest, a rust-red beast with a stump for a tail, spoken of like a bandit or a cruel captain, and mothers send their children into the fields with a warning instead of a blessing: Beware of Courtaud. On the eve of Saint Martin he is hunted down, his throat cut, his body pushed through the streets in a cart while the whole city pays to stare into his open eyes. Five weeks later, the wolves come back. Eleven years after that, legend says a pack led by a red, tailless wolf slipped through the broken walls in the winter of 1450, killed some forty people, and was finally driven onto the Île de la Cité and stoned to death in front of Notre-Dame. Jeremy Hanson tells the story from the folklore side, through the old village belief that a wolf who has tasted a man is never just a wolf again, and through the Fear Eaters, ancient hungers that ride inside real predators and grow stronger on the terror they leave behind. The wolf of Paris died twice. The story never died at all.

The Wolf Truce: Wolves, Witches and the Wilkołak of World War I

By the second winter of the war, a soldier could sleep through an artillery barrage. Then a new sound came out of the forests. In 1916, along the frozen Eastern Front, wolf packs fed by the battlefield dead lost their fear of rifles and began closing on the trenches and the wounded men left between the lines. Wartime newspapers reported poison, grenades and machine guns turned against them near Kovno, Wilna and Minsk. Then they reported something almost impossible: German and Russian soldiers declaring a truce so they could hunt the wolves together. Beneath that record, the soldiers told other stories. Wolves the size of ponies. Animals that watched the wire with patience. A shape at the tree line that rose off the snow and stood. And the villagers already had a name for it. Wilkołak. A person locked inside a wolf by a witch's curse, a belt laid across a wedding road, or a choice made willingly. Tonight, Jeremy Hanson becomes the Whisper Man and walks out past the wire into the winter two empires stopped killing each other, so they could kill something else together. Sleep with the light on.
