[…] And it was just an absolutely racist trope, which really succeeded in the sense that people stopped feeling empathy because this is, you know, this undeservingness managed to put a boundary, like a fence around a large group of people that they no longer had to care about because they were outside of the realm of empathetic. So this is like a very efficient, effective way of dismissing an entire class that would otherwise possibly fall under the responsibility of a government. We also get to decide who we care about and who we don't care about, who we should take care of and who we could ignore and who we could not just ignore, but even vilify. […]
