Niche Cortese by La Caplana aged in amphora

This episode is dedicated to a very special wine and a very special wine producer - Angora by La Caplana. https://www.lacaplana.it/it/# (https://www.lacaplana.it/it/#) Anfora, from La Caplana, ferments and ages in clay. It's an old method, older than oak, and it changes the wine in specific ways: slower oxygen exchange, steadier temperature, more texture from extended skin contact. The result is a Cortese with more grip, more shadow, less of the clean edges we expect from Gavi. We taste it and talk through what clay actually does to a white wine — structurally, chemically, on the palate — and what it says about a variety most people underestimate. Old vessel, same grape, a different kind of wine entirely. #WhyWhiteWine #LaCaplana #Anfora #Cortese #CorteseWine #AmphoraWine #AmphoraFermentation #WineInAmphora #PiedmontWine #PiemonteWine #ItalianWine #ItalianWhiteWine #WhiteWineLovers #WinePodcast #WineEducation #WineDiscovery #WineTasting #Terroir #WineCulture #BehindTheBottle #CorteseDiGavi #IndigenousGrapes #RareGrapes #BoutiqueWine #SmallProducer #ArtisanWine #AncientWinemaking #ClayAmphora #AlternativeWinemaking #WhiteWineJourney

Gutedel/Chasselas/Fendant: From Ancient Egypt to the Black Forest

In this episode of Why White Wine, we uncork one of Central Europe's long-established grape varieties: Gutedel (known internationally as Chasselas), a grape variety whose story stretches back thousands of years. From its early cultivation in the Eastern Mediterranean and Ancient Egypt to its journey across Europe and its enduring home in Germany's Markgräflerland, where it is a famous and beloved grape in the Schwarzwald, we trace the remarkable history of a grape that has quietly shaped the culture of white wine. Our tasting focuses on Sommerhalter's 2023 Gutedel Alte Reben trocken, produced from old vines rooted in loess and limestone-rich clay soils. Fermented in large oak casks and matured for at least twelve months on the full lees, this wine reveals the remarkable depth that Gutedel can achieve in the hands of a thoughtful winemaker. https://weingut-sommerhalter.de/weine-shop/gutedel-alte-rebe-trocken-075l (https://weingut-sommerhalter.de/weine-shop/gutedel-alte-rebe-trocken-075l) Together, we explore how extended lees ageing transforms the variety's naturally delicate character into a wine of impressive structure and complexity. Expect aromas of ripe apple, pear, citrus, subtle smokiness, fresh herbs, and delicate orange blossom, while the palate offers vibrant freshness, chalky minerality, gentle phenolic grip, and a long, balanced finish with hints of spice and fine liquorice. Along the way, we discuss why Gutedel has long been underestimated, how terroir and élevage redefine the grape's identity, and what makes this historic variety one of the most fascinating expressions of European white wine. Whether you're a seasoned wine enthusiast or simply curious about lesser-known grapes, this episode offers a journey through history, geography, and flavour—one glass at a time. #WhyWhiteWine #Gutedel #Chasselas #WinePodcast #NaturalWine #FemaleWinemakers #WineDiversity #AustrianWine #Weinviertel #SustainableWine #OrganicWine #WineTalk #PodcastForWineLovers #DiversityInWine #WomenInWine #italy #wine #winelover #winespotter #winelovers #whitewine #whywhitewine #whywhitewinepodcast

Etna Bianco by Inessa: unique indigenous grape from the volcanic soil of Sicily

In this episode, we are delighted to present this incredibly refreshing and elegant wine. Etna Bianco di Inessa comes from fertile volcanic soils, located at an altitude of 650-700 metres above sea level in the Linguaglossa area, in a microclimate characterised by a good temperature difference between day and night. The vinification is traditional in white, with ageing exclusively in steel. This wine is made out of the indigenous grape of Sicily called Carricante: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carricante (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carricante) In the glass it shows a beautiful straw yellow. The scent is immediately mineral, accompanied by hints of ripe yellow pulp fruit, white flowers and fresh aromatic herbs. On the palate, it has an excellent balance between freshness and flavour, with a finish of good persistence. Perfect with fish and shellfish, it also goes well with vegetarian first courses. Adventurous story of Grauburgunder in Italy!

Hello and welcome to the 4th episode of our podcast "Why White Wine", in which we taste white wine on air! Today's guest on the table is the famous grape, known by various names and with a rich and adventurous history. Grauburgunder, Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris has been known since the Middle Ages in the Burgundy region, where it was probably called Fromenteau. From Burgundy, it spread together with Pinot Noir and arrived in Switzerland around 1300. According to reports, the vine was a favorite of Emperor Charles IV, who had cuttings exported to Hungary by Cistercian monks : the friars planted the vines on the slopes of Badacsony on Lake Balaton in 1375. The vine was soon given the name Szürkebará, which means "gray monk". In 1711, a German merchant named Johann Seger Ruland (re)discovered a wild grape growing in the fields of the Palatinate . The wine he subsequently produced became known as Ruländer, and the grape was later discovered as Pinot Gris. Austria's signature white wine grape: Grüner Veltliner by Leo Maurer

Grüner Veltliner literally means ‘green grape from the village of Veltlin in Tyrol’ and it is generally assumed that it must be closely related to two other varieties that are currently making a comeback: Roter Veltliner and Früher Roter Veltliner, also known as Frühroter Veltliner. In today's episode, we introduce you to the evergreen, beautiful grape from the Weinviertel in Austria, produced by Leo Maurer. Take a look at his website here: https://www.maurerwein.at/pub/index.php (https://www.maurerwein.at/pub/index.php) We are an unsponsored project that aims to share their knowledge of sustainable, local, ethically trusted white wine producers. Erbaluce du Caluso: sustainable wine from Piedmont

Hello and welcome to the new episode where Uli and Darina are tasing the grape Erbaluce Bianca produced by Benito Favaro. Find a historical overview on Erbaluce by Slow Food here: https://www.slowfood.it/slowine/en/erbaluce-a-hidden-treasure-from-the-north-of-piedmont/ This grape has a long history in the Piedmont region, with the first written record dating to 1606. It is likely that it originated in the alpine hills of northern Piedmont. Wines made from Erbaluce tend to be dry with noticeable acidity, which is great for balancing out the sweetness. While the grape's acidity makes it ideal for sweet wine production, the dry wines need to have a lot of fruit in them to balance that acidity. Both the dry and sweet styles of Erbaluce tend to have that lovely apple aroma and flavour. Since the 1990s, Piedmontese producers have been working hard to improve the quality of Erbaluce wines so they can compete with the whites of Cortese and Arneis. contact us: whywhitewine@gmail.com #wine #whitewine #winepodcast #podcast #whywhitewine
