Ep 14. A Record in Bone with Michelle C Langley; australian archeology, mega fauna & a bit of prehistory!

Michelle C Langley is an australian archeologist and the author of A Record in Bone; exploring Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander bone & tooth objects. Her book is fascinating, documenting many records of organic materials used in Indigenous Australia. Allowing readers to get a glimpse of what every day tools looked like on this land before the industrialised world took over. I find these insights to be deeply fascinating & insightful of the refined relationships Australian Aboriginals had/have with the landscape and its many organic resources. During this episode, we discuss: Michelles work as an australian archeologist various bone & tooth tools How to determine what artefacts have been used for A little journey from Africa 300 000 years ago Mega fauna, the mystery of were they hunted? Different bone types & their unique uses, avian, terrestrial mammal, land mammal Tasmanian archeology Human bones & ancestral connections to the deceased The important cross over of academia and Indigenous Oral History I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did! Michelle C. Langley is an Associate Professor in the Australian Research Centre for Human Evolution (ARCHE) and Program Advisor for the Bachelor of Science (Archaeology) in the School of Environment and Science. Currently, she is the President of the Australian Archaeological Association (AAA). She is the author of 'A Record in Bone. Exploring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Bone and Tooth Objects' (2023, Aboriginal Studies Press) and has been involved in unveiling some of the earliest ornaments, bone tools, and shell artefacts discovered throughout the Australian and Southeast Asian regions. She also maintains research in Palaeolithic Europe, childhood archaeology, and most recently, Egyptology -- publishing in both specialist and overarching academic journals. Her work has been published in Nature Communications, Nature Human Behaviour, PNAS, Current Anthropology, Antiquity, Quaternary Science Reviews, and the Journal of Human Evolution. It is also regularly highlighted in the media: National Geographic, New Scientist, Archaeology Magazine, and Australasian Science Magazine, as well as NITV, SBS, and the ABC. Humans have come a long way sincethe beginning of our evolutionary journey. We have adapted through manydifferent landscapes which all play a part in how our body/mind/brains functiontoday. Simon Thakur has dedicated his life to understanding this ancestraljourney on a very deep level. Creator of Ancestral Movement, a framework & philosophy influenced by various Traditional movement practises, Simons academic work within evolutionary biology, body work modalities & the landscape. EP 7. Rewilding with Peter Michael Bauer

Rewilding is a philosophy & set of values which enable us to live like humans once again. In a world that is rife with disconnection & deterioration of human societies & landscapes, rewilding gives us a framework to guide us back into a connected way of living. It is about bridging the concepts & land-based lifestyles of hunter gatherers & using those beliefs & practises to guide us forward into a way of living that is connected to each other & the land. Peter Michael Bauer is an anthropologist, experimental archeologist, historian & life-long community organiser. His work focuses on the social & environmental impacts of the neolithic revolution & how understanding these impacts can provide us with solutions to the 6th mass extinction. Since the early 2000's Peter has been an integral catalyst in the human rewilding movement. This movement works to create resilience through the return to place-based regenerative subsistence strategies, inspired by those that exist outside of and those that existed prior to agrarian states (Indigenous folks). Peter is also an author, rewilding & ancestral skills teacher & founder fo Rewild Portland. 7 years Living in the Wilderness of New Zealand with Miriam Lancewood

Miriam Lancewood lived in the NZ wilderness with her partner for 7 years surviving off rations and meat that Miriam hunted with her bow & arrow. In this conversation we speak of the liberation of a simple natural existence. How her mind and body changed from a modern pace to a much slower more in tune way of being. The illusion of time & security, how none of it matters when you are living fully in the moment out in the wild. The innate memory of hunting & connecting with the land in such an intimate way. Her insights on social programming and how it all falls away when you spend long enough in the wild. The power of discomfort and how it builds resilience and a sense of being truly alive. This is a remarkable conversation of Miriam’s journey of being a modern nomad, a refreshing perspective of choosing freedom & living life in a way that is in close relationship to nature.
