Ep. 2 — 6 in 10 Students Fail the State Math Test. Here’s What Your School Isn’t Measuring.
Teachers, principals, district leaders — a question for your next staff meeting: how many of your students can solve a problem they’ve never seen and explain their reasoning in writing? Not repeat. Explain. If nobody can answer that this week, your students aren’t ready for spring testing.
Fewer than four in ten California students met the standard on the state math test last year. The largest group who failed sits in a bucket called “Nearly Met” — a gentle word hiding a canyon. Disaggregate for low-income students, English learners, and students with disabilities, and the number drops again and again. The average is a polite way to hide children.
This episode is about why — and what a school can do about it starting Monday, without a consultant, a new adoption, or another unpaid night of grading.
Meet Danny, thirteen, who can explain a bicycle gear with his hands but has never been asked to prove anything with numbers. Meet Ms. Rosa, staring at 38 written explanations at midnight, five classes deep, doing the only thing a human can do: skim. Her feedback arrives three days later and lands in the trash. She isn’t failing. She was handed tools built for a different test.
For teachers:
Why the new test asks three things at once — procedure, novel problem, written argument — and a worksheet teaches only one
How instant feedback, a second attempt, sentence frames, and a simulation got Danny from a blinking cursor to a written claim
How built-in translation let Lila, an English learner, show what she already knew
How to see “31 can compute, 14 can explain” the same night and reteach one skill to 14 students, not the whole unit to 38
Why “can’t they just ask a chatbot?” stops mattering when work happens in one domain, in class, timestamped
For principals and district leaders:
The Rep Count — how many times each student reasoned through a problem on the record, with feedback. It predicts spring scores before spring.
Three questions your leadership team should answer this week
What 58,000 state-test-style questions across 3,246 skills, built by one teacher with AI and free to every teacher, means for your budget and PLC time
How to tell whether your English learners, foster youth, and students with IEPs are growing at the same pace, skill by skill
