Podcast Overview

A remote tour of the Horniman Museum in South East London from cellist and theatre-maker Chloe Bezer. What we preserve in our museums, what we care for and study, says as much about us as it reveals about the items themselves. But though it looks a lot less chaotic, life in a glass case probably doesn’t tell the whole story. With her usual mix of subtle humour, engaging story-telling and delicate cello, Chloe will start to unpick the strands that tie us to our misconceptions, before they unravel completely. She is about to find out just how political the personal can be!

Women and Other Exhibits: Episode 4, Jellyfish

There are loads of images of jellyfish out there, but here’s the best page from the museum. From here you can read for yourself what they’re up to in supporting the development of these lovely creatures. https://www.horniman.ac.uk/search/jellyfish I've since discovered that the variant ‘medusa’, is also the name for jellyfish in Italian and Spanish. Nice.

Women and Other Exhibits: Episode 3, SHIELD

Here’s the link to the shield in the archives. I’ve spent a while (as you can imagine) trying to locate the image of the man and woman making love, but I just can’t see it: don’t feel too bad if you can’t either! https://www.horniman.ac.uk/object/13.46/ I’ve basically lifted entire sections of text from their website. Info is info - and they’re the experts!

Women and Other Exhibits: Episode 2, The Bombsite Bird

There wasn’t much information in the museum about the bombsite bird (aside from it’s appearance in the Hands-On Base). Here's an interesting article, if you're so inclined. And there's obviously the brilliant RSPB to go to more for information.  https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2010/apr/07/green-roof-safaris-black-redstart
