Gertrude Bell was an explorer, archaeologist and political adviser whose knowledge of the Middle East gave her considerable influence in the creation of modern Iraq. At a time when few British women travelled independently through the region, she crossed deserts, studied ancient sites and built relationships with local leaders. During and after the First World War, she became involved in the political decisions that shaped Iraq's emerging monarchy and supported Faisal as its first king.
However, Gertrude's story also raises difficult questions about British imperialism and the right to determine another country's future. Her views on women's suffrage reveal similar contradictions in her understanding of political rights and authority.
In this episode of Women in History, we explore Gertrude's travels, her personal relationships, her political influence and the tensions that shaped her career. Who was Gertrude Bell, and how should we understand her role in the making of modern Iraq?
