The answers, published in women’s own words, sold millions of copies and changed how a generation understood marriage, power and the female orgasm. That book was The Hite Report. Its author, Shere Hite, became one of the most influential feminist thinkers of her time. So why, fifty years later, has almost nobody heard of her? Our guest, Rosa Campbell, a historian of global feminism, set out to find out. Her new book, The Book That Taught the World to Orgasm and then Disappeared, uses original research to trace Hite’s rise, her cancellation and what her disappearance tells us about how women’s voices get erased, then and now. In this episode, we ask Rosa how the book came about and who Shere Hite really was as a person. We explore what The Hite Report revealed and put it in context with what else was happening for women in 1976. We dig into why this hugely popular book vanished from public consciousness, how much of that was deliberate, and what Hite’s “cancellation” by the far-right Evangelical movement actually looked like. Rosa is also honest about where Hite and her work fell short, particularly around intersectionality. As a historian of global feminism, she shares where she sees the movement now, post-MeToo, post-Roe and with the rise of the manosphere, and whether we can see echoes of Hite’s treatment in how women are treated today. Finally, we ask what she hopes readers, especially women who have never heard of Shere Hite, will take away from the book.    Gender Bias in Healthcare: Why Women's Health Training Needs to Change, with Dr Carys Sonnenberg & Dr Angela Sharma

   Women’s Health Made Easy: The GPs Closing the Gaps in Medical Training and Women’s Healthcare Today we’re joined by two incredible guests who between them bring decades of experience as GPs, menopause specialists and sexologists. They’ve written the book that probably should have existed in medical training for the last fifty years. Dr Angela Sharma is a Notting Hill GP who leads her own NHS menopause service and supports women with everything from heart disease to sexual health. Dr Carys Sonnenberg, who some of you will remember from her episode on metabolic syndrome in menopause, is a BMS-registered menopause specialist, NHS GP and founder of Rowena Health. Together with Dr Angela Wright, they’ve written Women’s Health Made Easy, a practical clinical guide for GPs and primary care teams that every woman should probably read too. Today we spill the tea on what happens when the gaps in medical training meet the gaps in women’s healthcare, and what these three did about it. We ask the questions about the book and why it needed to exist: • Women’s health has been made complex by decades of under-research, under-teaching and historical bias. When did each of you first realise something was missing? • What was mandatory in women’s health during your training, and where were the biggest gaps? • What does it look like in a consultation when you’re managing high-impact, intimate care with limited formal training? • Is it getting better? Are medical schools doing more? • Has social media changed how patients and doctors interact, with more information, and sometimes misinformation? • After the Renewed Women’s Health Strategy in April, we spoke to Wes Streeting about misogyny in healthcare.
