Afrofuturist Dr. Glenn Parris discusses science fiction author Octavia Butler

Glenn Parris writes in the genres of sci-fi, fantasy, and medical mystery. Considered by some an expert in Afrofuturism, he is a self-described lifelong sci-fi nerd. His interest in the topic began as a tween before the term Afrofuturism was even coined. As a graduate of The Bronx High School of Science, as were Samuel R. Delany, and Neil de Grasse Tyson, he was in good company to have his interests cultivated. Parris encompasses his own dichotomy of physician by day incorporating that scientific outlook into his creative works. Dr. Parris was lucky enough to develop a friendship with science fiction author Octavia Butler. In this episode of "Word of the Day," he discusses that friendship. Parris enjoys writing cross-genre in medical mystery, science fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction. His debut novel, The Renaissance of Aspirin, is the first in The Jack Wheaton Mystery series. Dragon’s Heir: The Archeologist’s Tale is his latest full length work is set to be republished by Outland Entertainment in 2021.

She speaks of being, of becoming, of totality. Is it a journal, an investigation, the life philosophy of a great poet woman? Is it closer to love and color and everythingness beyond measure — intimacy, Big Mind, and all-embracing love howling from the brave-bold island of Califia? Can we hold on? Or are we drifting? In this work, Devorah charts the infinite music inside of us all. It is so good to read and in-vision Devorah's journeys. After more than four decades of knowing Devorah — I bow to her tender, iridescent greatness.”

--Juan Felipe Herrera, U.S. Poet Laureate (2015-2017)
