WPR093: A New Year, A New World

So, 2020 has been a crazy year, right? Where do I even begin? A whole lot has shifted in my life and in my business over the last year, which is something I imagine a lot of you have been experiencing as well. So, I just wanted to take this end-of-year opportunity to check in with you and share a little about what’s been going on in my life and business, and how my family and I have been navigating life in quarantine. And I also have a pretty big announcement about the show and our future here at the Working Parent Resource Podcast at the end of this episode too.

In the introduction of my book, I write about how all of the changes we’re experiencing with this coronavirus is presenting us with an opportunity to slow down and take stock of where we are in every area of our lives. I know we’re all feeling it right now. I know times are incredibly tough, and for some families this time is shattering literally everything you thought you could rely on in life. It has broken you down to your core. But the longer this virus controls our lives, the more I believe this is the whole point. The world has shifted. I think every system, every structure, every norm we’ve taken for granted for thousands of years, all of the patterns of the past, it’s all being destroyed so we can re-build something better, something that’s more appropriate for the times we’re actually living in now. It’s time for us to start fresh, to integrate so many lessons we’ve learned as a species. We can do better, and this is our chance to create a new life for ourselves, and as a society. As hard as it is to believe, I really don’t think we’ll be going back to the way things were prior to 2020. And I for one believe this is a gift. There are so many things about our prior lives that simply didn’t work for a lot of people, in all aspects of life. Please take this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get rid of ANYTHING, and I mean ANYTHING, that is no longer serving you. Focus on what brings you joy and deep meaning and fulfillment. Take care of your health and your relationships. Do what you need to do for you, and don’t feel guilty about it. I know this is much easier said than done, and I also know that many of us, including me, are in a much more privileged position situation than others are. Do what you need to do to survive first, but as soon as you manage to come up for air, take a deep breath and start exploring how you can create a life you no longer need to just survive. Start creating a life you truly love.

Show Notes: https://argenalinstitute.com/93

Resources & Links Mentioned in this Episode:

The Argenal Institute Website

The Argenal Institute Blog

The Argenal Institute Podcast Archive

The Argenal Institute Library

The Argenal Institute Press

The Whole SELF Lifestyle™ Program

The Whole SELF Lifestyle for Working Parents by Sarah Argenal

Sober Curious: The Blissful Sleep, Greater Focus, and Deep Connection Awaiting Us All on the Other Side of Alcohol by Ruby Warrington

Sober Curious Podcast

Quit Like a Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed with Alcohol by Holly Whitaker

This Naked Mind: Control Alcohol, Find Freedom, Discover Happiness & Change Your Life

 by Annie Grace

This Naked Mind Podcast

The Thyroid Connection by Dr. Amy Myers

Email me: sarah@argenalinstitute.com

About The Argenal Institute LLC:

The Working Parent Resource Podcast is a place where we explore how to defeat burnout as working parents so we can finally enjoy these precious years of our lives. WPR092: Finding Qualified Mental Health Experts for Individuals and Organizations with Amy McKeown

Today we’re chatting with Amy McKeown, who is an award-winning health, mental health and wellbeing consultant. She coaches organizations of all sizes to build strategies with are both innovative and measurable, whilst providing unique expertise in implementing said strategies. Amy is also a respected thought-leader within her field, sharing her advice regularly on LinkedIn and at speaker events such as Mad World. Amy is also passionate about women's health and is actively campaigning to change the Equality Act 2010 to provide protection for families experiencing miscarriage or pregnancy loss.

As I release this episode, we’re heading into what experts are calling the darkest time of the coronavirus pandemic. Here in the United States and around the world, people of all ages are getting diagnosed, hospitalized, and are dying at unprecedented rates. Families have lost their routines, their childcare, their livelihoods, they’ve lost family members, and their very sense of sanity. Businesses around the world have wondered how they can support their employees, whether those employees work at home or are essential workers who need to be on site. Working parents and others struggle every day to figure out how to help their kids with school and get their work done while managing the other necessary aspects of life. And that’s just if they’ve been the lucky ones who haven’t gotten sick throughout this pandemic so far. It’s a really difficult time for everyone for so, so many reasons, and we need mental health support both at home and at work more than ever.

There are leadership experts and other “well-being experts” out there who have offered their services to individuals and organizations for many years. Amy and I have both noticed a trend in people who are not trained in mental health offering services that they simply don’t have any training or qualifications to provide. And it scares us both. I reached out to Amy a few months ago to get her thoughts on why this is happening, and how consumers, again both individuals AND companies, can filter out qualified mental health providers from those who may cause more harm than good.

Show Notes: https://argenalinstitute.com/92

Resources & Links Mentioned in this Episode:

Amy McKeown Website

Amy McKeown LinkedIn

Amy McKeown Twitter

Beware the Mental Health Expert article by Amy McKeown

Sorting the Wheat from the Chaff: How to Identify Who Has the Mental Health Expertise You Need by Amy McKeown

The Death of Expertise by Tom Nichols

Mental Health First Aid

The Argenal Institute Website

The Whole SELF Lifestyle for Working Parents by Sarah Argenal

Email me: sarah@argenalinstitute.com

About The Argenal Institute LLC:

The Working Parent Resource Podcast is a place where we explore how to defeat burnout as working parents so we can finally enjoy these precious years of our lives.
