The Dangers of Rabbit Holes, Info Dumps, and Talking to BobTwo months ago, I had an idea for a podcast. To encourage people who used to write, who had a novel or a story or script to pick them back up. I’m that person. I’m going back to old National Novel Writing Month projects from over a decade or more. I’m starting again.For example, I started a novel in 2009. A key location in the novel was at that time, an old abandoned shopping mall that was being torn down. Ten years later, that site is now the largest grocery store in the county. I had to rewrite to make this location work in my head for the revisions.Revisions are fun. At least, I think so. I enjoy the whole B not A or what about Plan M? redirection of the story. I ended up spending weeks reading about publishing on Kindle!I don’t want to talk about Kindle publishing today. I want to talk about how to control the dive into research. Here’s my problem. I enjoy reading the details. I’ll start with Wikipedia (yes, I know, it’s not a legit source, I shouldn’t rely on it. I teach debate. I know the rules about wiki. But it’s an ideal spot to get the keywords to research. The links at the bottom of the wiki page have led me on a merry chase!) How do we avoid spending too much time in a rabbit hole? Especially for a novel, I think rabbit holes are fascinating. I’m very likely to find something that will make an impact on my story. It’s time to get passionate again. My name is Kim Krajci. I’m a writer. I’ve been writing professionally for seven years. But when I was challenged at the beginning of the year to write down my goals for the year, the first thing I wrote down was “publish a book on Kindle.”But which one? And how?Maybe you face those questions too. Many of us do. We’ve spent hours at a keyboard or with a notebook, putting down our words… only to let them remain on our hard drives and never take them out again.Look, Emily Dickinson wrote thousands of poems that were never printed in her lifetime. At least, that’s the story I always heard. I think it’s sad that she never shared this creative part of her life while she was alive. Let’s let our creative self out again. Maybe that novel that you put away isn’t worth finishing. But at one point in your life, you were compelled to write that story. You wanted to write then. Let’s get back in touch with that desire, even if what we wrote wasn’t very good. We have time to learn to do better. What we need may be the motivation to begin writing again. It’s time to take it out and examine it.
