Electrician Apprentice take on the Introduction to The NEC (Article 90)
Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! (https://rss.com/podcasts/joshthesparky/voicemail) Alright everybody, welcome back to the channel. In this one we’re going straight into the Introduction to the NEC – Article 90. This is before Chapter 1. Before you get into any of the actual chapters. We’re breaking down the scope, what’s covered, what’s not covered, the purpose of the Code, how it’s arranged, enforcement, mandatory vs permissive rules, informational notes, units of measurement, and more. I’m reading it, explaining it, and learning with you along the way — just like the deep NEC browsing videos. Sit back, relax, grab your Code book (or NFPA Link), and let’s go through Article 90 together. Drop any questions, corrections, or extra knowledge in the comments. Especially if you’re a master or Code guru — call me out if I miss something. More notes and charts will be up on the site. www.joshsparky.com (http://www.joshsparky.com) Until next time. Moderating The Noise
Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! (https://rss.com/podcasts/joshthesparky/voicemail) In this raw, behind-the-scenes style episode, Josh jumps on the mic while working on videos to deliver some real Monday motivation. The core message is simple but powerful: moderate the noise. Other people’s opinions don’t define you, your goals, or your path. Episode Summary Josh talks about why you shouldn’t let outside opinions (especially negative ones) derail what you want to do. Using his own YouTube channel and NEC studies as examples, he explains how putting yourself out there opens the door to real learning, discussion, and growth — even when people call you out. He emphasizes becoming the moderator of your own mind: listen when it might help, but don’t let other people’s thoughts take up permanent space in your head. Fill that space with what actually matters to you (for him, that’s the Code). The episode also touches on: Building your own identity instead of living by other people’s expectations Taking action on your ideas (the worst outcome is usually just learning it wasn’t for you) Different paths inside the electrical trade (you don’t have to be a math genius or a perfect speaker) The value of putting in the hours and just starting Why now is a great time to create and put your work out there (including a quick mention of Podmation) Key Takeaways Other people’s opinions are mostly irrelevant to your goals. Don’t let them control your direction. Be the moderator of what enters and stays in your mind. Listen, evaluate, then delete what doesn’t serve you. You’re allowed (and encouraged) to do the thing. Failure is just information — it clears the way for the next attempt. Develop your own conclusions instead of blindly following the crowd or algorithms. In the electrical trade (and life), there are many different avenues. Find the one that fits you. Consistency and action beat waiting for perfect conditions or perfect approval. THE BEST SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM FOR ELECTRICIANS?
Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! (https://rss.com/podcasts/joshthesparky/voicemail) In this episode of JoshTheSparky Radio, I talk about FastTraxSystem and NECChat, a platform created by Paul Abernathy that I really enjoy using as I continue learning and growing in the electrical trade. This isn't a paid promotion or sponsored episode. I talk about why I use the platform, my weekly Code Question of the Week, the community of electricians and educators on there, the recent phone notification update, the leaderboard, CMCP, and why I hope more electricians get involved and help the community continue growing. I also talk about how FastTraxSystem fits into my NEC studying, my Deep NEC Web Browsing series, and my overall goal of becoming a better electrician while sharing what I'm learning with others.

JoshTheSparky LIVE: 10 NEC 2026 Brain Busters | Electrical Code Breakdown
Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! (https://rss.com/podcasts/joshthesparky/voicemail) JoshTheSparky works through 10 Brain Buster questions based on the 2026 National Electrical Code (NEC). These questions come from the weekly Question of the Week series on NECChat and were compiled into a 10-question study packet. ⚡ The 10 Brain Busters 1 — Motor Calculations A 5 HP, 230V single-phase motor with a 1.15 service factor and 22A nameplate current. The question covers branch-circuit conductor sizing and the maximum initial overload setting under 430.32(A)(1). 2 — Box Fill How many #12 AWG THHN conductors can be installed in a 4" × 4" metal box that is 1½" deep? A practical breakdown of box volume and conductor volume allowances. 3 — IMC What is the maximum trade size permitted for IMC? This question focuses on finding the applicable NEC article and table. 4 — Noncoincident Motor A feeder supplies a 30A air compressor and a 24A dust collector, but the equipment is designed so only one can operate at a time. What load must be calculated? 5 — Dwelling Receptacle Spacing A 14-foot living room wall is unbroken by doors, fireplaces, or similar openings. How many receptacle outlets are required under 210.52(A)(1)? 6 — Grounding Electrodes A dwelling service has two 8-foot ground rods installed six feet apart. The first rod measures 38 ohms to earth. What does the NEC require? 7 — Commercial Kitchen Demand What types of commercial kitchen equipment may be included when applying the demand factors in 120.56? 8 — Commercial Kitchen Load A restaurant feeder supplies a 12 kW electric range, 8 kW deep fryer, 10 kW griddle, and 15 kW convection oven. What is the calculated demand load after applying the applicable demand factor? 9 — Household Electric Ranges Four household electric ranges are each rated at 14 kW. Using Table 220.55 and the applicable notes, what is the calculated demand load? 10 — Dwelling General Lighting Load A 2,400-square-foot single-family dwelling raises an important distinction: the NEC uses different VA-per-square-foot values for determining minimum branch circuits versus performing feeder/service load calculations. 📚 What This Study Session Taught Me The biggest lesson from these ten questions is that the NEC rewards process, not memorization. It's much more valuable to know how to open the Code, identify the correct article, find the applicable table, read the notes, recognize what information matters, and verify the answer. Some of these questions were straightforward. Others required digging through the Code and reconsidering the calculation. I'm still an apprentice, still learning, and still making mistakes. I'm documenting that process because learning the NEC is something I'm taking seriously. Study the Code. Ask questions. Work through the problems. Learn from your mistakes. Then do another one. ⚡ Always Learning. 🔌 Resources Brain Busters: JoshTheSparky.com (http://JoshTheSparky.com) NEC Community: NECChat.com (http://NECChat.com) Powered by TradeHog.net (https://tradehog.net) These Brain Busters are based on the 2026 NEC and are provided for educational and study purposes.
