Ep. 2: XCHANGE XPERIENCE PREVIEW — LGBTQ+ Youth & Foster Care

XCHANGE XPERIENCE PREVIEW of the LGBTQ+ Youth Xchange for Change's 2nd (virtual) Xchange Xperience: LGBTQ+ Youth in Foster Care — Visible and Demanding Change on 12/10! REGISTER NOW: xchangeforchange.org. LGBTQ+ youth are overrepresented in foster care compared to their non-LGBTQ+ peers and experience higher rates of psychiatric hospitalizations, juvenile justice involvement, placement in group homes, and homelessness. These disparities hit LGBTQ+ youth of color particularly hard given that youth of color and youth from low-income families are driven into the system at disproportionately high rates due to systemic racism and other societal disparities. Youth in care not only face challenges to their safety and wellbeing but also endure ongoing threats to their legal rights. In our second episode, we chatted with Currey Cook about the national legal landscape, learned about the importance of participatory research and data representing LGBTQ+ youth, and talked about support for youth in out-of-home care. Co-hosted by Shear Avory and Elliott Hinkle. (IG: @shear_avory / @elliotttheunicorn) Currey Cook (he/him) is the Senior Counsel and Youth in Out of Home Care Project Director at Lambda Legal.
