Unfun – The Music of Jawbreaker Dear You... I’m Sorry.
On this episode, John & Dan get together on the 26th anniversary of the release of the landmark album Dear You, the final record released by the highly influential underground band Jawbreaker. Listen as John formally apologizes for hating “Dear You” while our duo explores a number of unpopular opinions like Jawbreaker never sounded like Green Day despite everyone saying so, Dan actually liking Dear You on its release, how showing up to concert to throw change at a band on stage was so ‘90s Twitter, and how creativity and the Gen X obsession with “selling out” may actually be at odds.

Christian Slater. Tony Hawk. Murder, and an international drug trafficking ring exposed by skateboarders. Obviously. Oh the ‘80s.
On this episode, John & Dan talk about skateboarding’s moment in the cultural zeitgeist of the 1980s, what it would come to mean to them both personally and professionally as they grew up, the glory of the Bones Brigade, and craziness of Noir as “youth culture” skateboarding movie.
See how our dynamic duo answers that age-old question “Have you ever gleamed.....inside a cube?”

They were cops. They also sang. And danced. ABC was excited to air this. Seriously.
John & Dan re-watch the pilot episode of the most anticipated new show of the 1990 Fall Season from the mind of legendary TV writer Steven Botcho. It does not go well.
Listen to our duo explain the TV landscape of “The Big 3-and-Half" networks at the time, someone reveal their love of musicals yet pretend to have never heard Randy Newman’s 80’s classic “I Love LA” and learn exactly how many minutes producer Sausha Durkin made it through after being cajoled into watching the pilot.

So it’s 1985. Muhammad Ali, Cindy Lauper, and Liberachi walk into a bar...
Dan & John look back at how worlds collided when ‘Wrasslin meets Pop Culture that was WrestleMania I, how it morphed into Sports Entertainment, show how terrible they are that math as they try to value how many actual people a Neilsen share represented in 1985, and make questionable analogies between Tik Tok in 2021 and MTV in 1985 to show just how “over” music television with the mid-80s kids.

Moviemaking From An Uncomfortable Place (Like The Back Of A Volkswagen.)
It’s Kevin Smith – part deux. Dan & John talk about Smith’s major studio debut – and massive commercial flop – Mallrats, and why they loved it anyway - as the film cemented its cult status, recently turned 25 with a tone of media coverage and special DVD / Blu-Ray release.
They discuss which they like better – Clerks or Mallrats, the undervalued impact of ‘90’s “dorm room theater”, and ultimately how Kevin’s tale of making a movie with a bigger budget and more people to answer to helped our duo navigate their own experiences, and what really defines a successful film or any creative project in Dan & John’s eyes.
