Antti Pihlakoskea voi sanoa suurten tapahtumien taustavaikuttajaksi: hän on hankkinut Suomeen useita arvokisoja, toiminut Suomen Urheiluliiton vetäjänä sekä on toiminut merkittävissä edustustehtävissä ympäri maailman. Vuonna 2015 hänet valittiin Kansainvälisen yleisurheilujärjestön hallitukseen. Edustustehtävien taustalla on nuoruusvuosien juoksuharrastus: juoksijana hän voitti pronssia SM-viesteissä vuonna 1983 sekä sisäratojen SM-kilpailuissa vuosina 1983 ja 1984.
