Yo, This Can’t Be Life is podcast hosted by Bri Montgomery to educate Black women on how to improve their health and wellness. As a chronic illness warrior fighting Lupus, Bri knows far too well that our bodies can have a plan of their own. We break down complicated medical issues into easily digestible pieces that you can share with your friends and loved ones. We discuss all the things your doctor should have told you but didn’t. Natural and holistic approaches to chronic illness and mental health will also be explored.    What Is Endometriosis with Lauren Kornegay of EndoBlack

   This week we sit down with Lauren R. Kornegay, the founder of EndoBlack, a nonprofit organization that advocates for Black women affected by Endometriosis. We discuss: What is Endometriosis How is Endometriosis diagnosed What are the endometriosis symptoms How is endometriosis treated What causes endometriosis Lauren R. Kornegay was born in Washington, DC, and grew up in Oxon Hill, MD. She graduated from Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD, where she received her B.A. in Speech Communications. While at Morgan State University, she experienced a series of events that led her to a gynecologist in Baltimore, MD. In meeting her new gynecologist, she would be introduced to a disorder that was an unfamiliar disorder at the time —endometriosis. Diagnosed with endometriosis at the age of 20, Lauren experienced the pain, struggles, exhaustion, and confusion accompanying the disorder. She felt like there wasn’t anyone that looked like her that had been impacted by endometriosis that she could reach out and connect with. Having previously searched social media, websites, and other avenues, she knew something had to change.    In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Mare Mbaye to discuss all things cervical cancer for Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. When should you get screened for cervical cancer? What is HPV and what does the HPV vaccine protect you from Why Black women have a higher death rate from cervical cancer Dr. Mare is an OBGYN in New York City. Her passion for women’s health began in medical school and was further solidified during residency where she noticed that many of her patients had limited exposure to basic information about their health. Her goal is to use her platform to reach a wider audience and provide them with easy to understand, concise and evidence-based information on various health topics. In her spare time, she loves weight lifting, rock climbing, scuba diving, and affordable fashion. […] And it's one of those numbers of strains that causes cervical cancer. So the vast majority of HPVs, even the high risk ones, most healthy people can actually clear on their own. It does take a little bit of time. Some patients, it'll take six months, some patients, it'll take two plus years, but a lot of times we don't actually have to do any procedures on the cervix and your body will clear it on its own. What we're trying to do when we follow patients up a little more closely after an abnormal pap is to catch the people where the HPV doesn't go away like it should or where the pap smear continues to get worse.
