Podcast Overview

I bring together two traditions that most people keep apart. One is the depth psychology that began with Jung. The other is the living Vedic tradition, into which I was initiated and have practised for more than twenty years. These are not rival teachings. They are different languages for the same inner world, and each reaches what the others cannot. In this podcast I follow one question at a time, drawn from primary sources and read with a sceptic's eye, in a register that belongs to neither the materialist nor the spiritual camp.

The Direction We Forgot

The Vertical We Forgot

For most of my adult life I lived two lives at once. One was a Western life in its successful form, twenty years in corporations and most of the major cities of the world, and I do not look back on it with contempt. I liked it. Underneath it ran a second track the whole time, depth psychology, Jung, the Eastern traditions, meditation.

Almost five years ago my wife and I left Europe with our children and moved to Costa Rica. From here the difference is so plain I can no longer unsee it. The modern world has perfected the horizontal axis, everything you can touch, count and set beside your neighbour, and quietly abolished the vertical, your relation to whatever is larger than you. A civilisation can grow unimaginably rich on the one axis while starving on the one it has forgotten.

Drawing on the cultural philosopher Jean Gebser, this essay is about that flatness, why the way out is not a return to religion or to the village, and what the Eastern traditions call vivéka, the capacity to tell the real from the unreal.

I am Daniel Paulus. I work at the meeting point of Jungian depth psychology and the living Vedic tradition. Different languages, one inner world.

Writing and essays: danielpaulus.substack.com
Individual guidance: danielpaulus.net

Where Jung Was Wrong About Yoga

Jung spent decades studying yoga. He called it one of the greatest achievements of the human mind. He also concluded that Westerners should not practice it.

On four specific counts, he was wrong.

This essay examines where his critique holds up and where it breaks down. His misreading of samadhi as unconscious regression. The Eurocentrism he dressed as psychology. The asymmetry between how he treated his own method and how he treated yoga. And the fact that by the time he issued his warnings, the tradition had already been transformed into something else entirely.

The audio version of the full essay published on Substack.

Read the full text with references and practical reflection at https://danielpaulus.substack.com

1:1 Counseling: https://en.paulus.yoga/counselingWeb: https://en.paulus.yoga

SAUNDARYA - Sundara / Beauty

Sundara The Supreme Reality or Paramatman has time and again been described by the Vedic and Tantric seers as Satyam, Sivam, Sundaram.

The first two of these attributes, Satyam and Sivam , are intangible and imperceptible, except in the form of experience. The third attribute, Sundaram , however, is the attribute that is tangible and perceptible Because beauty always relates to form.
