Ep. 10 | Lan | Roadblocks
2024 marks the 10th year of Lan, a two-time international student (first in Belarus, then in the U.S.) and cultural psychologist, being in the United States. Lan shares with me her love-hate relationship with the roadblocksâthe H1B visa and immigration statusâthat stand in her dream of becoming a professor. There were many times she felt like giving up on academia because the ride it's too rugged. The lack of freedom of choice makes her feel vulnerable. Nonetheless, she managed to turn her vision from 10 years ago into reality.

Ep.9 | Ning: The Path Never Planned
Professor in HR and organizational behavior, mama of two boys, coffee shop owner and a new-coming Q-grade, Ning joins me today to talk about a path that she never planned. There are sparkles in Ningâs eyes whenever she talks about teaching or her students, she did not imagined to be a professor at first. Unlike many who are so stressed over H1b and the status in general, Ning did not know much about H1b yet got it as part of a teaching position. Life seems full of potential and U.S. could just be a testing field for Professor Hou.
