About You Love Us - The cult, the chaos, the eyeliner. A Manic Street Preachers podcast.
A deep-dive podcast chronicling the rise, rage, and reinvention of the Manic Street Preachers — from Blackwood to Britpop and beyond. Loud, literate, and unapologetically alive.
Episode 15 Critical Thinking - The Art of Longevity
What happens when a band that’s spent more than three decades questioning everything starts questioning itself?
In 2025, Manic Street Preachers returned with Critical Thinking their fifteenth studio album and another chapter in one of British music’s most remarkable stories.
From the apocalyptic urgency of ‘Decline & Fall’ to the widescreen beauty of ‘Hiding in Plain Sight’, we look at what the album says about a world that’s increasingly difficult to make sense of — and a band that’s still trying to do exactly that.
Why does Critical Thinking sound both unmistakably Manic and strangely different? What inspired the album’s themes? How does it fit alongside The Ultra Vivid Lament, Futurology and the band’s earlier work? And, after more than 30 years, are the Manics still capable of making music that genuinely challenges us?

Episode 14 The Ultra Vivid Lament - Finding Beauty in Noise
After decades of rage, revolution and reinvention, Manic Street Preachers returned in 2021 with one of the most elegant and emotionally rich albums of their career. The Ultra Vivid Lament traded clenched fists for open hearts, replacing certainty with reflection and proving that growing older doesn’t have to mean growing quieter.
In this episode Phil and Darren explore the stories, themes and music behind the band’s fourteenth studio album. From the shimmering pop of Orwellian to the haunting beauty of The Secret He Had Missed, they examine an album born in uncertain times that somehow finds hope amid division, nostalgia and loss.
Was this the Manics’ late-career masterpiece? Why did James Dean Bradfield swap guitar riffs for piano-led songwriting? How did influences like ABBA, Talk Talk and The Associates shape the record?
Join us as we discover why sometimes the loudest statement is made in a whisper.

Episode 13 Resistance is Futile - Memory Against Oblivion
This week on You Love Us, Phil and co-host Darren explore Resistance Is Futile, the thirteenth studio album from Manic Street Preachers.
Released in 2018, Resistance Is Futile saw the band embrace melody, memory and romance while still keeping one eye firmly fixed on politics, history and loss. We discuss how the album balances widescreen pop moments with reflections on art, photography, fame and the increasingly fractured modern world.
From the anthemic rush of “International Blue” and “Distant Colours” to the emotional weight of “Hold Me Like a Heaven” and “Liverpool Revisited”, Phil and Darren examine the album’s themes, standout lyrics, critical reception and where it sits within the Manics’ remarkable catalogue.
Along the way there’s plenty of debate, deep-cut trivia, and the usual attempts to answer the impossible question: why do the Manics keep making albums that sound completely different while still sounding unmistakably like themselves?

Episode 12 Futurology - Europe after Midnight
This week on You Love Us, Phil is joined by co-host Darren and special guest Leigh for a deep dive into Futurology — the Manics’ icy, European road movie of an album.
From the shadow of the Berlin Wall to the motorways of continental Europe, the trio unpack how Manic Street Preachers created one of the most adventurous records of their career: an album full of krautrock pulse, fractured history, glamorous decay and late-night existentialism.
Expect discussion on standout tracks like “Walk Me to the Bridge”, “Europa Geht Through Mich” and “The Next Jet to Leave Moscow”,.
There’s also the usual mix of trivia, tangents, strong opinions, and at least one moment where somebody gets far too emotional about motorways in Eastern Europe.

Episode 11 Rewind the Film. The Sound of Looking Back
In this episode, we settle into the reflective, autumnal glow of Rewind the Film (2013). Perhaps their most understated record since This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours…
After the maximalist swing of Postcards from a Young Man, the band took a sharp left turn. Gone are the bombastic choruses. In their place: acoustic textures, spoken-word passages, and songs that feel less like statements and more like conversations with the past.
It’s a subtle but crucial shift, and one that gives the album its unique identity within the Manics catalogue.

Episode 10 - Postcards From a Young Man - Heavy Metal Motown
In this episode we open the glossy, grand, and occasionally gloriously over-the-top scrapbook that is Postcards from a Young Man (2010), the tenth studio album.
Coming directly after the austere intensity of Journal for Plague Lovers, the band decided to swing the pendulum the other way entirely. As bassist and lyricist Nicky Wire famously declared, the goal was simple: “one last shot at mass communication.”
With huge arrangements, orchestration, gospel choirs, and a cinematic sheen, Postcards is the Manics aiming squarely for the cheap seats — but with their usual mix of intelligence, melancholy, and cultural references hidden in the margins. Think widescreen rock somewhere between Everything Must Go and late-era Bowie, with a hint of Vegas glitter thrown in for good measure.

Episode 9 Journal for Plague Lovers - The Return of Richie
This episode tackles the most emotionally loaded, ethically fraught, and artistically uncompromising record in the Manic Street Preachers’ catalogue: Journal for Plague Lovers (2009). An album built entirely from the lyrics left behind by Richey Edwards, this is not nostalgia, not exploitation, and definitely not easy listening. It’s the Manics staring directly into the void — and refusing to blink.
We unpack how the band made the radical decision to set Richey’s words to music verbatim, no edits, no smoothing of the sharp edges. Produced by Steve Albini (because of course it was), the album deliberately rejects polish in favour of abrasion, tension, and claustrophobia. The result is a record that sounds less like a comeback and more like an exorcism.
We discuss how James Dean Bradfield approached singing these lyrics - not performing them, but carrying them - and how Sean Moore and Nicky Wire locked into a sound that deliberately echoed early Manics aggression without indulging in retro cosplay. This wasn’t The Holy Bible 2. This was something colder, older, and more haunted.

Episode 8 Send Away the Tigers - Don't Call This a Comeback
In this episode, we dive headfirst into the 2007's Send Away the Tigers the album where the Manic Street Preachers collectively said, “You know what? Let’s be loud again.” After the introspective hush of Lifeblood, the band strapped themselves back into the feather-boa-and-bullhorn energy of their earlier selves. It’s a record of renewal, rage, optimism, and the occasional political sucker punch, all delivered with choruses big enough to rattle the Severn Bridge.
We explore the lyrical resurgence fuelled by Nicky Wire rediscovering his love of myth-making melodrama, the band’s decision to return to their “big guitars, big ideas” ethos, and the curious case of why critics suddenly remembered the Manics were brilliant. Spoiler: the album debuted at #2 in the UK, went gold, and critics called it their “best since Everything Must Go”
As always, we lace the conversation with personal stories, obscure trivia, and just enough humour to make Nicky Wire roll his eyes (affectionately).

Episode 4: This is My Truth & The Politics of Identity
The Manic Street Preachers have conquered the charts with Everything Must Go, but Richey’s absence is now absolute, and Nicky Wire is holding the pen alone for the first time.
We look at the release of This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours — a record that swapped punk grit for widescreen melancholy, topped the charts, and made the Manics stadium kings.
From Welsh volunteers in the Spanish Civil War to barefoot bass takes in a creaky French château… from political fury in S.Y.M.M. to the unexpected tenderness of Born a Girl — we explore the stories, the recording sessions, the quotes, the critical reception, and the moment this band entered their imperial phase.
