“You made me listen to this?”

About “You made me listen to this?”

‘You Made Me Listen To This? ‘ The podcast where two music lovers throw albums at each other and then come back to discuss what they really thought about them. Each episode, we choose an album for the other person to listen to — sometimes a classic, sometimes something completely unexpected — and then we sit down and talk about it honestly. No pretending to like something because everyone else does. No music snobbery. Just genuine reactions, memories, opinions, debates, laughs, and the occasional “why on earth did you make me listen to this?!”

   11-“..2’s company, 3’s a Peep Show..”

🎧🎬 2’S COMPANY, BUT 3’S A CROWD… EH?! 😂 Well, not on this occasion! ‘YOU MADE ME LISTEN TO THIS?’ IS BACK FOR SEASON 2… AND WE’RE KICKING THINGS OFF WITH A BANG! 🎉 This time, Mike and Richard were joined by fellow music lover and part-time DJ, the one and only Mike Kearney! 🎶 And what a mix of albums we had to get our teeth into! 🎵 The Fall
🎵 Duran Duran
🎵 Temple of the Dog
🎵 Olivia Dean
🎵 Siouxsie and the Banshees
🎵 Jim Moray
🎵 Catatonia Three people, three different perspectives, and plenty of opinions! 🤔😂 From straight-to-the-point comments and laugh-out-loud moments to agreements, confusion, nostalgia and some genuine love for the music… this episode had a little bit of EVERYTHING! Having a third voice around the table certainly gave us a different angle, some fresh insight and, of course, the occasional difference of opinion! 😉 Because that’s what music is all about, isn’t it? We don’t all have to agree, we just have to enjoy the conversation! And what better way to launch SEASON 2 than with a brilliant guest, a cracking selection of albums and three music lovers sharing their honest thoughts?

“My Top 5 is better than yours. No it isn’t. Yes it is”

🎧 10 EPISODES… SEASON 1 COMPLETE! 🎧 With 10 episodes recorded for our first season of “You Made Me Listen..To This?”, Mike and I got together to reflect on what we’ve been through over the past 20 or so weeks. Not only have we been reconnecting a long-standing friendship, but we’ve also been educating, listening, loving, disagreeing, surprising ourselves, laughing, agreeing, getting nostalgic, learning… and, tbh, just absolutely LOVING listening to albums that we’ve given each other — plus quite a few that YOU, ‘our musical friends’ have thrown at our poor ears to endure! 😂 So we thought, what better way to finish Season 1 than to choose our Top 5 albums and Top 5 individual tracks from everything we’ve listened to? And here they are… in the order WE rated them! 👀 We’ve called this special episode: “My Top 5 Is Better Than Yours… No It’s Not… Yes It Is!” 😂 Because, quite frankly, that pretty much sums up Mike and Rich — and no doubt sums up YOUR opinions of the choices we’ve made too! So… whose Top 5 do you agree with? And more importantly… WHO GOT IT WRONG? 😜🎶 Season 1 has been an absolute blast. ❤️ Now sit back, turn it up and join us for our very own musical argument! 🎧🍻

10-“..White Velvet and Black Blood Cells..”

🎉 OUR TENTH EPISODE…AND WHAT A WAY TO CELEBRATE! 🎉 Albums by Deacon Blue, Seal, Robyn Hitchcock, Takipnik, Alannah Myles, Shed Seven, The White Stripes and Longpigs were thrown at Mike and Rich to listen to, review and comment on. And what a selection it was! A wonderful mixture of emotions, opinions and disagreements between Mike and Rich…exactly what you’ve come to expect! 😂 And, to make our 10th episode worthy of a celebration, there’s one album we BOTH agreed is an absolute cracker! 🔥 But which one? You’ll have to listen to “You Made Me..Listen To This?” to find out! 🎧🎶 10 episodes down…plenty more albums to go! 🍻

9-“..Bad Massive Big Songs in the Attic..”

Hi mate, I’ve called the episode Albums from Prince, Richard Thompson, Depeche Mode, Massive Attack, Duran Duran, The Golden Leaves, Editors and Michael Jackson gave Mike and I plenty to chat about… and believe me, we didn’t hold back! 😂 Is Michael Jackson’s Bad actually better than Thriller? Duran Duran making “serious” music? 🤔 The connection between the Editors album and The Terminator… really?! 😂 And The Golden Leaves… never heard of them before, but would Mike and I ever listen to them again? These were just SOME of the questions, opinions, disagreements and surprises we got into. And my word… what an hour and 15 minutes it was! 🎶🎙️ If you enjoy hearing two mates listen, discuss, disagree, agree and occasionally educate each other about music, give it a listen. And remember… YOU choose the albums. So send us your recommendations — any genre, any decade, anything goes!

8-“..Nevermind the music, here’s the banana skin..”

Albums by Queens of the Stone Age, The Power Station, Chris Rea, RJ & the Painful Memories, Fleet Foxes, Sex Pistols, The Imagined Village and Ryan Adams were scrutinised, listened to, reviewed, disagreed over, loved, enjoyed… and, in a few cases, pleasantly surprised by Mike and Richard! This was one of those episodes where we both felt we could have carried on talking for hours! 😂 But which one of us had NEVER heard the Sex Pistols album before? 😲 Which one of us was really impressed by an album that resonated with his feelings at a particular time? And which one of us described an album as: “A collection of guitar-driven, fast rock, with a bass that reminded me a bit of The Stray Cats…” 🎸 Well… the answers to all of the above — and a whole lot more — are waiting for you in what we think is a rather fine episode of You Made Me Listen To This! 🎧 Have a listen, tell us what you think, and most importantly… Did you agree with our reviews?

   7-“..Metal Machine WHAT?..”

This episode of “You Made Me Listen To This” was, to be honest, one where Mike and I really had to dig deep and give some properly honest opinions. 😬🎧 Not only were we challenging each other with albums, and we had YOU, again, the general public, throwing some musical curveballs our way… and we started wondering whether some of you were deliberately trying to push our ears to their absolute limits! 😂 Mike listens a lot while he’s driving, while I tend to do my listening while out on the bike 🚴♂️🎶 — so when we finally met up, there were plenty of smirks, laughs, probably a few choice words, some genuine surprises and memories from the past suddenly coming flooding back. But most importantly… we enjoyed it! This episode features albums from: 🎵 Lou Reed
🎵 Arcadia
🎵 Fred again..
🎵 Hayseed Dixie
🎵 Björk
🎵 RAYE
🎵 Gil Scott-Heron
🎵 Transvision Vamp Eight albums. Eight very different musical worlds. Some we loved, some challenged us, some brought back memories… and some had us wondering “WHY did you make me listen to this?!” 😂

   6-“..WOW WOW WOW..”

WOW!!! Yes…the word was used quite a lot in this latest podcast as Mike and I discussed, reviewed, agreed…and quite often disagreed…on albums by Muse, Depeche Mode, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Crash Test Dummies, Morbid Angel, The Clash, Noah Kahan, and Iron Maiden. Talk about a musical melting pot! It’s a combination that would make a witch’s cauldron bubble over with surprises, twists, and plenty of debate.

5-“..Stories from Mike, Stories from Rich..”

With albums by PJ Harvey, The Cranberries, David Crosby, ABC, Skin, Portishead, Fleetwood Mac and Barenaked Ladies blasting through Mike’s and my headphones for the past couple of weeks, it was time to meet up once again. As always, we listened, reviewed, debated and, rather surprisingly, found ourselves agreeing on far more than we expected…or did we? Because there was one particular album that split us completely. Not just a little disagreement…we were poles apart! Which album caused the biggest divide? You’ll have to listen to find out…

   4-“..Wish You Weren’t Here..”

This week, Mike and I willingly put our musical reputations on the line by listening to albums from The Cult, Leonard Cohen, David Bowie, Anne-Marie, Pink Floyd, Starsailor, The Horrors, Lloyd Cole and Placebo… and, somehow, we’re still talking to each other! 😂🎶 As always, we listened, scrutinised, debated, praised, questioned, disagreed, changed our minds (occasionally!), and probably confused ourselves a few times along the way. What we didn’t expect was that we’d end up learning even more about each other’s personalities than the music itself. It turns out you can tell a lot about someone by the albums they love… and the ones that make them stare blankly into the middle distance wondering, “What on earth am I listening to?” 🤣 A huge thank you to Ian Lindley for recommending the Leonard Cohen album. We genuinely appreciate every recommendation… although we’re still not entirely sure whether Ian was being kind or just wanted to see us argue! 😉 Thanks, Ian! So… were these albums musical masterpieces, hidden gems, or ones we’d quietly leave on the record shop shelf? There’s only one way to find out. 🎧 Give the episode a listen, then let us know where you agree, where you think we’ve completely lost the plot, and—most importantly—which album we should force each other to listen to next!

    3-“..when DOVES cry..”

Well Mike and I have been ploughing through albums from Doves, Erasure, Wolfsheim, Kiefer Sutherland (yes, that Kiefer Sutherland!), Kanye West, The Music, Tears for Fears, The Cranberries and even a listener-requested album from Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band. The results of our opinions were, let’s just say…interesting!

    2-“..restring your air guitar..”

The second EVER episode of “You Made Me Listen To This” is now LIVE! 🎉 Michael and I are on a roll as we dive into albums from Madness, R.E.M., Andy Taylor, The Doors, Dio, Jesus Jones and Future Islands. As usual, there are some very conflicting opinions along the way, making for a rather tasty discussion! At times, you’ll be nodding along in agreement, and at others, you’ll be wondering what on earth we’re listening to… 🤣 There’s plenty of passion, debate, and the occasional moment that makes you want to pluck that imaginary air guitar out of the sky and just… PLAY! 🎸 Have a listen and let us know what you think — and don’t forget to suggest albums you’d like us to review in future episodes! 🎧🤘
