"The Honduras Episode"

On June 1st, a group of fourteen saints representing the Memorial Road Young Adult Ministry traveled to Tegucigalpa,Honduras. This episode will take you back to Honduras with us. (Be sure to listen to the full introduction to explain how the episode is laid out.)

After a restful first night at the Baxter Institute campus, our first bus ride of the week took us slowly up a mountain outside of the city on winding dirt roads. Walking down to the building site where we were to erect a house for a lovely sister in Christ named Else, we were instantly faced withthe differences of our normal American suburban living compared to the more difficult conditions of these wonderful people. Yet, we were greeted with early morning smiles from every child and adult we passed by, many times receiving awarm verbal welcome. The people of Honduras are full of joy and kindness. That was our impression from the start and we were grateful to be there to do whatever the Lord had in mind for us to do.

We built the house on the first day and painted it on thesecond, all the while spending time with Else and her family. We also visited Mi Esperanza, a place full of hope as they help women break the cycle of poverty in their families by teaching them useful working skills and then providing small loans for them to start their own businesses. The women of Mi Esperanza are talented and inspiring, and we were blessed to share some time with them, even some receiving the fruit of their cosmetology training.

The rest of our trip was full of service and wonderful experiences: tutoring and painting with the children and young adults living at Breaking Chains (another wonderful organization boarding young adults and their families, helping them break poverty cycles and caring for their daily needs), feeding people in need on the streets of Tegucigalpa out of the trunk of a car, helping teachers at the end of their school year shut down their classrooms (Sunshine school is a private school connected relationally to Breaking Chainswhere some of their boarders can attend, but only with the help of financial assistance from donations).

It’s hard to capture in words the feelings experienced onthis trip. Hugging Hondurans is special, and there was a lot of hugging on this trip. The missionaries are obviously walking daily in faith and their faith inspired us to keep trusting in God to provide. Of course, our small group of fourteen bonded and enjoyed laughing together throughout the week, often while we enjoyed the tastes of the delicious Honduran coffees. And I would be neglectful if I didn’t mention the amazing two-day refreshing stop in picturesque Roatan on the way home. Island life resets your soul somehow.

Learn about Mi Esperanza

Learn about Breaking Chains

For more information about the Memorial Road Young Adult Ministry visit www.mrcc.org/ministries/youngadults

MRCC Young Adults links: mrccyoungadults

Podcast Instagram: youngadultworldpodcast
