A Guide To Renovation Budgeting: How to Plan Costs & Avoid Unexpected Expenses
Danielle Tanner is a designer at Topology with over five years of experience in the interior design and renovation industry. Having also completed two home renovations of her own, she brings a grounded, real-world understanding of what it takes to plan, budget, and deliver a successful project. In this episode, host and interior designer Athina Bluff sits down with Danielle to explore the often-overlooked reality of renovation budgeting and the importance of approaching a project with clarity before any work begins. Danielle explains why setting a realistic budget from the outset is essential, and how a well-prepared scope of work can help prevent unexpected costs and keep a project on track. The two talk through the process of gathering and comparing builder quotes, and why itemised breakdowns are crucial for understanding where your money is going and identifying potential discrepancies. Danielle also highlights the hidden costs that frequently catch homeowners out, from painting and flooring to waste removal, site setup, and temporary accommodation during larger-scale renovations. The discussion emphasises contingency planning. Danielle advises a 10–15% budget buffer for unforeseen issues or price changes. She stresses tracking every expense to maintain control and explores affordable design upgrades that provide refinement through thoughtful, incremental changes. This conversation is about the often messy balance between design dreams and the practical reality of budgets. It’s a reminder that true confidence in a renovation doesn’t just come from a mood board; when you bring your creative vision and your financial planning closer together, you’re not just building a space—you’re creating a foundation for a home that feels as good as it looks. How Do You Choose the Perfect Sofa for Your Home? Comfort, Durability & Design Insights from Loaf
Nicky Line is the Chief Product Officer at Loaf, where she oversees the development of sofas and soft furnishings designed to balance comfort, durability, and everyday living. With a deep understanding of how people actually use their homes, she brings a practical, design-led perspective to one of the most important pieces of furniture in any space. In this conversation, host and interior designer Athina Bluff sits down with Nicky to explore what really goes into choosing the right sofa, moving beyond style alone to consider how comfort, lifestyle, and daily habits shape the decision. Nicky explains that finding the right fit starts with understanding personal comfort and balancing the varying preferences of everyone in a household. The discussion moves into the technical side of sofa making, including fabric durability and what metrics like rub counts actually mean in real-world terms. Nicky breaks down the trade-offs between different cushion fillings, from feather and foam to hybrid constructions, and how these choices affect both long-term comfort and maintenance. The two also explore the practical realities of buying a sofa, from measuring your space properly to navigating delivery challenges like narrow hallways, tight staircases, and unexpected access issues. The talk also covers balancing style with durability for busy homes, focusing on family-friendly, easy-to-clean fabrics. Nicky shares advice on what to ask before purchasing, and why these early checks can prevent some of the most common (and costly) mistakes. Listener questions focus on finding solutions for couples with different seating preferences, and how to keep lighter fabrics looking fresh in everyday use. This is a conversation about comfort, intention, and the hidden detail behind the furniture we use every day. It’s about understanding that a sofa is never just a sofa but a space where life happens, and where design quietly supports the way we live. Russell Hewes is the founder of Russell Hewes Limited, a London-based construction company specialising in home renovations and bespoke building projects. With years of experience working on complex home transformations, he brings a grounded, practical perspective to what can often feel like an overwhelming process. In this episode, host and interior designer Athina Bluff sits down with Russell to explore what it really takes to approach a renovation with clarity and confidence before any building work begins. Russell explains the importance of creating detailed, room-by-room schedules of work, and how these early documents become the foundation for clear communication between homeowners and builders. The two talk through the process of obtaining accurate quotes, and why transparency and consistency matter when comparing different contractors. Russell breaks down key construction stages, from first fix to second fix, helping to demystify the language of building work and give homeowners a clearer sense of how a project unfolds over time. The conversation addresses the practicalities of hiring builders, highlighting red flags like vague estimates or missing contracts, and emphasises why written agreements and contingency buffers are essential for successful renovations. Listener questions explore the complexities of working with listed buildings, from navigating permissions to sourcing appropriate materials, as well as the detail-driven process of designing bespoke bathrooms that balance function and finish. This discussion covers preparation, communication, and the discipline of building. A Colour Experts Guide to… Creating the Perfect Paint Scheme in Your Home
Tash Bradley is a colour expert and Director of Interior Design at Lick. As the author of the bestselling book ‘Master The Art of Colour’, she has built a reputation for helping people understand not just how colour works, but how it makes us feel. In this episode, host and interior designer Athina Bluff sits down with Tash to explore the transformative power of colour and paint and the often-overlooked relationship between light, space, and mood. Tash explains why understanding a room's orientation is the foundation of every successful colour scheme, and how the changing quality of natural light throughout the day can dramatically alter the way a paint is experienced. The two talk about the rituals of choosing paint colours, from testing samples on different walls to living with them over time, and why patience is often the secret ingredient in creating a home that feels truly considered. Tash also shares her approach to creating flow between rooms and discusses the rise of colour drenching - a technique that can bring warmth, character, and a surprising sense of calm when used thoughtfully. The conversation moves beyond decoration into the psychology of colour itself. They discuss how different shades can shape the atmosphere of a room, influence our emotions, and support the way we live, work, rest, and connect with one another. Drawing on examples from her own projects, Tash reveals how colour can be used not just to transform a space, but to transform the experience of being in it. The two also answer listener questions on choosing the right white paint, balancing bold colours with neutrals, and overcoming the fear that so often accompanies decorating decisions. This debut episode is about confidence, intuition, and learning to trust your eye. It's about creating homes that reflect who we are, and understanding how colour can quietly shape the way we feel every day.
