How Do You Handle Criticism in Youth Ministry?
Observe the emotion. Acknowledge the personal. Find the objective. Apply the general.
In youth ministry, if you hear negative feedback, do this:
See the emotion 😡
Is the parent, volunteer, or student really upset? Can you dial down the volume to actually listen? Or are the emotions clouding your ability to hear?
Check your heart ❤️
Pride is a thing. Make sure you don’t dismiss something just because what’s being critiqued is your baby.
Look for an objective critique 👀
Inside the negative, is there an objective thing you can do or change?
Ask if you should/can make a change ⁉️
See if there is an action step you can take or should take
Decide and move on 🚙
Gather information on the critique, determine if it is something you will act on, or not, and then move on. You’ve got ministry to do!
