Senator Pate is an alumnus of Dalhousie University Law School, and was previously an executive director of the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies. She was named a member of the Order of Canada in 2014 for her work and advocacy on behalf of women who are marginalized, victimized, or incarcerated, and for her research on women in the criminal justice system. In 2016, she was nominated to the Senate of Canada by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau where she has sat as an independent senator for Ontario ever since. She founded the Canadian Centre for Political Leadership, co-founded the Barcelona International Public Policy Hub, and worked in positions with the Office of the Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court and with Canada's Mission to the European Union. Annamie Paul is now <strong>the first black Canadian and first Jewish woman to be elected leader of a federal party </strong>in Canada.
