Introduction

The name Zechariah may be interpreted "Jehovah Remembers." He was not only a prophet, but also a priest. His office in the prophetic ministry overlapped that of Haggai, who specifically emphasized the instant blessings for the building of the temple. Zechariah goes far beyond his time and reveals the first and second coming of the Messiah, showing the Lord's ultimate victory expressed particularly with the words found in the last two verses: : "holiness unto the Lord." Judah, the Royal Tribe: It is beneficial to take a closer look at Judah. The dying Jacob made this prophecy: "Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise; thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father's children shall bow down before thee. Judah is a lion's whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up? The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be" (Genesis 49:8-10). Out of Judah comes "Shiloh," the Messiah.
