   Building Against the Odds

Hassan Mushaid: Turning Adversity Into a Founder’s Advantage In this episode of Zero.24%, Michael Livingstone speaks with Hassan Mushaid, founder and CEO of Creative Composite, a marketing agency specialising in the dental industry. Hassan’s journey into entrepreneurship did not begin with a clear ambition to become a founder. Growing up in a family with limited formal education and significant financial hardship, his early focus was much more immediate: finding stability, earning an income and helping support his family. From experiencing financial insecurity and the fear of eviction to navigating racism and systemic barriers, Hassan learned early how to be resourceful, adaptable and persistent. Those survival skills would later become some of his greatest strengths in business. Michael and Hassan explore the unconventional path that took him from dental nursing into marketing, business development and eventually entrepreneurship. Hassan reflects openly on the early days of Creative Composite, including undercharging for services, being afraid to hire and recognising that some of the agency’s earliest work was not at the standard he wanted it to be. Rather than hiding those mistakes, Hassan explains how they became part of his education as a founder. The conversation also explores resourcefulness when money is limited. Hassan shares how he found creative ways to access support and build a team before he could afford experienced full-time employees, including working with interns and creating opportunities for mutual learning. Michael and Hassan also discuss ego, mentorship and the importance of asking for help. For founders who come from environments where survival often means relying on yourself, admitting that you do not know something can be difficult. Hassan argues that growth often begins when founders stop trying to prove themselves and start actively seeking people who can help them move forward. For Hassan, coming from an underprivileged background is not something founders should automatically see as a disadvantage. He describes the resilience, street smarts, adaptability and hustle developed through difficult circumstances as a potential “superpower” when applied in the right environment. They also discuss why underrepresented founders need exposure to different networks, industries and opportunities. Sometimes the biggest limitation is not ability, but simply never having seen what is possible. In this episode, they discuss: Hassan’s journey from financial hardship to entrepreneurship Growing up without entrepreneurship feeling like an obvious career option Experiencing racism and systemic barriers Moving from dental nursing into marketing and business development The experiences that eventually led to Creative Composite Mistakes Hassan made during the early stages of building the agency Why underpricing can damage both service quality and business growth Overcoming the fear of hiring and building a team Using resourcefulness when you cannot afford traditional solutions Hassan’s experience working with interns and creating mutual value Why founders need to become comfortable asking for help The importance of mentors and learning from people further ahead Moving beyond ego and self-protection as an entrepreneur Why Hassan returned to the uncertainty of entrepreneurship after achieving financial stability as an employee The importance of entering new rooms and exposing yourself to different possibilities How difficult life experiences can develop valuable founder skills Why Hassan considers his background a potential “superpower” Challenging traditional rules and finding unconventional solutions Lessons for Black and underrepresented founders building businesses with limited resources About Hassan Mushaid Hassan Mushaid is the founder and CEO of Creative Composite, a marketing agency focused on helping businesses within the dental industry grow. His career began in dentistry, where he developed experience across dental nursing, practice management, business development, sales and marketing before eventually moving into entrepreneurship. His route into business was shaped by financial hardship, limited access to traditional opportunities and the need to become resourceful from an early age. Today, Hassan draws on both his professional experience and lived experience to build Creative Composite while encouraging other founders to recognise the value of persistence, adaptability, mentorship and unconventional thinking. His story demonstrates that founders do not need to come from traditional entrepreneurial backgrounds to build successful businesses—and that some of the skills developed through adversity can become powerful assets when building a company. About Creative Composite Creative Composite is a marketing agency specialising in the dental industry. The agency works with dental practices and businesses to strengthen their marketing, attract patients and support business growth through strategy, branding, digital marketing and customer acquisition. Hassan founded the business after developing extensive experience within both dentistry and marketing, allowing Creative Composite to combine industry knowledge with commercial marketing expertise. The Man Who Built Manchester’s Tech Scene Without Waiting for Permission

Episode summary In this episode of Zero.24%, Michael Livingstone sits down with Manoj Ranaweera, founder of Techcelerate, Deal Lite and SkilledUp Life, and one of the people credited with helping build Manchester’s tech startup ecosystem. Manoj’s story is not the polished founder fantasy. It is about failure, rebuilding, bootstrapping, community, exits, and the uncomfortable truth that most founders do not have unlimited access to capital, talent or networks. From launching his first tech startup in 2004, to building founder communities, creating the Northern Tech Awards, exiting ventures, and now helping startups access skilled volunteer talent through SkilledUp Life, Manoj has spent two decades inside the real machinery of startup survival. His work has focused on founders, commercialisation, investment readiness, and building ecosystems before they become fashionable. For founders operating in the 0.24% reality, this conversation matters. Because when funding is limited, your network, your credibility, your commercial discipline, and your ability to build with what you have can become the difference between giving up and staying in the game. Why you should listen This episode is for founders who are tired of being told to “just raise money” when the system was never built with them in mind. Manoj brings a direct, experienced and sometimes uncomfortable perspective on what it really takes to build a startup when you do not have easy access to capital. He has built, failed, exited, restarted, and supported thousands of founders across the UK tech ecosystem. His journey shows why community, consistency, commercial thinking and founder resilience matter long before investment arrives. In this episode Michael and Manoj explore: The reality of building when you do not have funding Why Manoj’s first fintech failure became the foundation for everything that followed How Manchester’s tech startup ecosystem was built through events, relationships and founder energy Why founders need to understand commercialisation before chasing investment The role of SkilledUp Life in helping startups access global volunteer talent Why talent, not just money, is one of the biggest barriers for early stage founders What underrepresented founders can learn from ecosystem builders Why sharing what you are building can create more opportunity than hiding your idea The difference between looking like a startup and actually building one What founders need to do when the investment landscape does not favour them Guest bio Manoj Ranaweera has been building tech startups and related ventures since 2004. He is the founder of Techcelerate, Deal Lite and SkilledUp Life, and has been closely associated with the development of Manchester’s tech startup ecosystem. His ventures include Northern Tech Awards, acquired by GP Bullhound, and edocr.com, acquired by Accusoft. Through SkilledUp Life, Manoj helps tech startups access skilled volunteers from around the world, supporting founders who need talent but may not yet have the resources to hire full teams. Zero.24% angle This conversation goes to the heart of Zero.24%. Black founders received just 0.24% of venture capital funding in 2024, but founders still have to build, survive, sell, hire, learn, and grow. Manoj’s journey reminds us that the startup world is not only shaped by investors. It is also shaped by founders who create ecosystems, open doors, build communities and help others keep going when money is not available. This episode is not about pretending funding does not matter. It is about what founders do when funding is not coming fast enough. Pull quote options “When funding is limited, community becomes infrastructure.” “Some founders wait for permission. Manoj built the room.” “The startup game is not just about raising money.
