报纸是近代出现的新兴载体，是近代社会表达政治意向、传播思想文化和社会信息的重要工具，其内容包罗万象，反映了近代中国政治、经济、军事、科学、文化、生活等各个方面。随着时间的推移，其文献价值和史料价值日益突显，被喻为中国近现代史研究的史料宝库，尤其是在近代社会、文化史研究中，报刊史料的重要性几乎无可代替。然而因年代久远，近代报纸缺漏严重，又散藏于各馆，求全较难，虽然几种全国性大报有影印版或数字产品问世，但各地方性报纸较少整理，大大限制了这一宝库利用的效率。 “中国历史文献总库·近代报纸数据库”由国家图书馆出版社开发，以国家图书馆的馆藏为主，其他图书馆所藏的报纸为辅，优先选取具有全国影响或在某一地域影响较大的报纸，进行数据加工，提供全文检索、篇目定位、热区显示、特色导航等功能，方便使用者进行查阅。本数据2020年已完成一至五辑建设，上线报纸400余种，总计150万版。这些权威报纸基本覆盖了全国各地区，全面反映了民国时期各地的风土人情、社会万象。
