Organizations like the Zomi International Refugee Council (ZIRC) express serious concerns that USCIS’s expanded enforcement powers will create a ”chilling effect,” deterring eligible families from seeking humanitarian protection. They fear that stricter scrutiny could lead to minor inconsistencies, translation errors, or trauma-related memory gaps being misinterpreted as fraud. There’s also concern that family or community ties to pro-democracy groups could be mislabeled as security threats, risking denials and removals. Ultimately, they warn of increased denials, removals, and family separations, potentially exposing individuals to armed conflict, persecution, or natural disasters in their home countries.
