About 21st Century Vitalism
Islands of Coherence is a podcast for people who refuse to go numb. The world is in freefall - politically, ecologically, spiritually - and most of us can feel it. But Nobel Prize-winning physicist Ilya Prigogine showed us something remarkable: when a system is in chaos, small pockets of coherence don’t just survive - they can shift the entire system toward a higher order. This show is about building those pockets. Each episode draws from spiritual practice, somatic work, artmaking, ecology, and activism to explore a single question: how do we cultivate wholeness - in ourselves, in our communities - while everything around us fragments?

[…] But like you said, oftentimes when we get triggered, our old trauma resurfaces. And in our trauma response, we're no longer able to hold the dignity of the other person. The part of our brain that is capable of doing that literally gets shut down by our amygdala and And the more we are able to heal our own traumas, the more we are practicing emotional regulation tools like breathing every day. the more our capacity to be in discomfort increases, like we're able to stretch ourselves before we go into panic and before our amygdala kicks in. And so I think part of the training, you know, like when I started doing nonviolence trainings when I was in my teens, it was like, how do we form blockades? […]
