[…] So at its simplest, military deception is causing an adversary to perceive a situation incorrectly so that they take or fail to take an action that ultimately helps us achieve our military objective. So it's interesting if you fool the adversary, but you're really looking for a change in behavior. So I have a 14 year old son. isaac and he'll jump out behind a doorway to frighten me and that's fun right it's fun to mislead your adversary but it doesn't help you achieve your military objective unless they're taking an action or inaction that is consequential to the military objective and there's pretty convincing historical evidence that military deception works so in his seminal work barton whaley who taught at the naval postgraduate school His book, Stratagem, he looks at 124 different cases where from 1914 to 1969, and he looks, okay, did the attacking force use surprise?
