Нации формируются на улице, это очень долгий и сложный политический процесс, без желания начать этот процесс он не происходит, считает историк Ботакоз Кассымбекова из Университета Цюриха. Она также объясняет, почему она убеждена, что российская нация не сложилась. По ее словам, главным препятствием является имперское мышление. При этом, как считает историк, критическим моментом были 1990-е, когда Москва решила ввести войска в Чечню. Кроме того, Кассымбекова объясняет то, чем постсоветские россияне отличаются от постсоветских казахстанцев в видении себя.
