About A Frame of Mind

A Frame of Mind takes a hard look at race in America through the lens of one art museum. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art sits at a crossroads: in the middle of Kansas City, in the middle of the country, and in the middle of America’s shifting cultural landscape. We’re working through the slow and sometimes messy change of a big museum asking what it can be and whose stories it tells. Along the way, host Glenn North meets brilliant Black and Native artists and thinkers in Kansas City who help us see through their eyes.

Episode 4: The Names We Carry

Published 17 Feb 2026 · Transcript excerpt

[…] So we have the plantation owners and enslavers on one document and they're living next to each other. This is probably the best explanation why we have the North to Rawls. This gets a little complex, so I'll walk you through it. From what I understand, my great-great-grandfather was an enslaved man named John Rawls, and he had a son named Horace. Somehow, Horace ended up in the custody of a neighboring enslaver named Edmund North. We don't know how exactly, but he seems to be recorded there in a slave census as a little boy. And because he was considered property, his name got changed to his enslaver's name, which was North. […]
