The income kept the wolf from the door but a few crumbs of economic success were no substitute for freedom.</p><p>By the time Jack Kiely was born the Irish had been relegated to third class citizens. Their sole purpose - to rent roll a largely absent gentry who cared little for them. He was determined to secure full Irish independence - and he was willing to sacrifice everything to achieve it.</p><p>Ray Knowles is jack's grandson - a retired pharmaceutical executive. He lives near Henley in Arden with his wife Tracy and dog "Dwayne".</p></p>
