[…] We weren't. Even so, I knew nearly everybody because of the sauna. Our turn was Tuesdays. If you've never lived in a Finnish apartment building, every household gets an allocated sauna time each week, and you go, and over a few years you come to know every face in the building, whether you want to or not. I was a child through all of this. The other kids in the building and I spent our summers in those woods building shelters, jamming branches between rocks, making roofs out of whatever we dragged up there. Every so often we'd find something we shouldn't. Cartridges, mostly. That always meant somebody's parent calling the police and a couple of officers walking up the hill to look at whatever we'd dug out. […]
