Anatomy of an End is a podcast about mental health, crisis, and human behavior under pressure.
New here? Start with STIGMA, our first Field Guide. We explore the assumptions we carry about mental illness, where they come from, and what happens when we see a label before we see a person. It’s the place to begin getting to know us and the questions at the heart of this show.
Join host Davis Henry and forensic psychological consultant D. Edward “Dana” Tatum as we examine what shapes people’s lives, how distress gets misunderstood, and why reaching out or accepting help can be more complicated than it sounds.
Our psychological-autopsy episodes explore individual lives and the relationships, pressures, experiences, and systems surrounding a death. Our Field Guides step back to examine broader subjects like stigma, shame, addiction, isolation, and the ways we respond to people who are struggling.
Suicide prevention is central to why we do this. But understanding people begins long before a crisis. We ask difficult questions, challenge easy explanations, and question our own assumptions along the way.
These are serious subjects, but they don’t have to be cold or impossible to talk about. You don’t need a clinical background to follow the conversation. Our aim is to make difficult human behavior more understandable and help us become better prepared to engage when it matters most.

Field Guide #1: STIGMA - The Story We Write Before We Know the Person
What do you think you know about someone after hearing a single word about them? An alcoholic. A schizophrenic. Depressed. Psychotic. Addicted. Sometimes one piece of information is enough for us to start writing the rest of a person’s story before they have had a chance to tell it themselves. This is the first Anatomy of an End Field Guide, and it marks a new chapter for the show. Psychological autopsies will remain a central part of Anatomy of an End. They let us look closely at one life, t...

Psychological Autopsy #6: Sarah - No News Is Not Good News
Sarah was 56. Quiet, meticulous, private, and intensely hard on herself, she spent much of her life struggling with anxiety, isolation, and a relentless fear that she was never doing well enough. When she entered a state psychiatric hospital, clinicians described her as a model patient. She caused no trouble. She made no demands. She kept to herself. Eventually, she appeared to be improving. Then she died by suicide. Davis Henry and D. Edward “Dana” Tatum use Sarah’s psychological autopsy to ...

Anatomy of an End - Episode 5: Sam - He Looked Better (The Danger After Detox)
Sam was 28 years old and had spent years struggling with opioid addiction. After his family finally got him into treatment, he completed medical detox. He was clean, coherent, cooperative, and, for the first time in years, he looked like himself again. Two days later, Sam died by suicide. In this episode of Anatomy of an End, Davis and Dana examine Sam's psychological autopsy and the dangerous assumption at the center of his story: that looking better means someone is better. Dana explains wh...

Anatomy of an End - Episode 4: Mark - Giving It All Away
In this episode of Anatomy of an End, host Davis Henry goes in completely blind as forensic psychological consultant D. Edward Tatum walks us through the case of “Mark,” a 52-year-old man who died by suicide within 72 hours of his first arrest. Through the psychological autopsy, Dana unpacks the subtle but significant warning signs that were present during Mark’s final conversation with his daughter. These were signs that only become clear in retrospect. We examine changes in body language, t...

Anatomy of an End - Episode 3: Noor - External Reactions, Internal Realities
"We build courts and jails to process external actions, but they are fundamentally ill-equipped to understand internal realities." At first glance, Noor's story seems straightforward. A 19-year-old woman struggling with the criminal justice system. Court records. Stalking charges. Threats against a judge. A jail suicide. But psychological autopsies rarely begin where they end. In this episode of Anatomy of an End, forensic psychological consultant D. Edward Tatum and Davis reconstruct Noor's...

Anatomy of an End - Episode 2: William - Between Two Lives
In this episode of Anatomy of an End, we examine the life and death of William, a respected corrections clinician whose apparent suicide revealed a hidden life that few, even those closest to him, knew existed. As we reconstruct William's psychological landscape, we explore the relationships, decisions, and competing narratives that emerged after his death. Was he a devoted father and clinician who became trapped in a life of secrecy? A predator who concealed his true nature for decades? Or a...

Anatomy of an End – Episode 1, Part 2: Susan – The Person
Who was Susan before she became the subject of an investigation? In Part Two, we move beyond the scene itself and examine the life of the young woman at the center of this case. Through her relationships, personal struggles, behavior patterns, and the perspectives of those who knew her, a more complete picture begins to emerge. Understanding a death requires first understanding a life. Before we can explore the events that led to Susan's final days, we must understand who she was, what she ca...

Anatomy of an End – Episode 1, Part 3: Susan – The Final Days
In the final installment of our first case, we examine the days and hours leading up to Susan's death. By this point, we have explored the scene and the life that preceded it. Now, we turn our attention to the events immediately before her death—the relationships, decisions, conflicts, and circumstances that may help us better understand how this tragedy unfolded. While no investigation can fully answer every question, examining the final chapter of a person's life can sometimes reveal patter...

Anatomy of an End – Episode 1, Part 1: Susan – The Scene
Welcome to the first episode of Anatomy of an End. Our mission is simple, though the subject matter is not: to examine deaths by suicide through the lens of psychological autopsy and use what we learn to advance prevention. By revisiting these stories with compassion, honesty, and evidence, we hope to challenge the stigma, misconceptions, and cultural myths that often prevent meaningful conversations about suicide and mental health. In Part One of our inaugural case, we begin with the death o...
