Perfectionism

Perfectionism is an addiction. This addiction obstructs an awareness of “good enough”… It is a rigid way of thinking and seeing the world as polarized, dots of black and white. Life becomes a battery of tests and there are only two outcomes -pass or fail, a mishmash of fantasy and nightmare. Vulnerability becomes the arch enemy. Perfectionism and intimacy are incompatible. I’ve always told my clients that perfection is for plastic not people. Overtime even with a winning track record you’ll find yourself isolating, defensive, afraid you’ll be exposed as an imposter. Perfectionism is a magic trick and belongs in fairytales not real life. Perfectionism runs rampant online fueled by filters and followers. Online profiles become land mines of popularity and a sink hole for self-esteem. How do you decide what gets shared on your social media? What are the activities that call upon the perfectionist -school, hobbies, parenting, sports relationships? What is perfectionism costing you… a shot at intimacy? You’ve heard me share with you about my struggles with self-doubt. I believe for most entrepreneurs this is a huge challenge because there are no set standards. How do you know if a piece is finished when the real question is is it ever finished? There’s always some aspect of my creative intention that falls short of expectation. My compromise is treating my inner critic as a well-meaning collaborator and not a disapproving parent. I’ve noticed since taking this approach I have fewer nightmares of getting caught naked in public or frozen in place with a very hungry lion in pursuit. I sculpted Camouflage during Covid lockdown. Vulnerability surfaced as an invisible enemy rather than my quirky sidekick. There didn’t seem to be room for all my emotions. Fear wrecked havoc with my psyche, a real coup d’état. Fortunately, I knew how to harness that energy. I used my creative license to come out of hiding. Camouflage is asymmetrical, with a lazy eye and bees in her bonnet. Nothing like a wonky self-portrait to lift my spirits and banish perfectionism! I am good enough…and so are you. In my world, scars, ripples, wrinkles and patina are beautiful. Are you a perfectionist?
