Rithika MERCHANT - Artist

At the crossroads of the East and the West, Rithika Merchant’s work reflects her journey as a global citizen. After growing up in Bombay, she left to study in New York and graduated from Parsons in 2008. Her work is inspired by Indian tribal art and miniature Mogul paintings especially by the way these different fragments are woven to form a complete picture. In her work, she uses these old narratives in a more contemporary context. Nature also plays a central role in Merchant’s work, which is emphasized by the use of organic and unsaturated color forms. She uses watercolour and collage, is inspired by botanical drawings and popular art of the seventeenth century, while using iconic symbols and images of different cultures, to try to understand the diaspora, and memory. In this episode we will talk about her lockdown in India far from her husband and home in Barcelona. You will learn about her process and how she collaborated with Natacha Ramsay to design a range of clothes and accessories for the fashion brand Chloé.
